A Moroccan journalist who accused a famous politician of corruption has been sent to prison Monday, sparking international outcry from press freedom supporters.
Hamid Mahdaoui is facing a 1.5-year term and a $150,000 fine following being deemed responsible of defamation, according to his counsel, Mohamed Hedach.
Mahdaoui, the editor in chief of Badil.info, was charged following a report from Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi. Mahdaoui had published a video on his website alleging Ouahbi of dishonesty and fraud, whom the justice minister rejected.
