Following violent fights over a centuries-old mosque on Sunday that left four people dead and numerous others injured, the northern Indian city of Sambhal is on alert.
The Shahi Jama Masjid (mosque), a federally protected 16th-century structure, was the scene of clashes between demonstrators and police during a court-monitored inspection.
A municipal court ordered the assessment last week, just hours after a petition asserted that the mosque was constructed on the site of a temple that had been destroyed.
As can be seen from videos released on social media , the mosque was scattered with sticks , stones and sticks. It was alleged by the protesters that four individuals were shot by the police , a claim which the police themselves have refuted.
