A man convicted of repeatedly stabbing famous British-Indian novelist Sir Salman Rushdie on a lecture stage in New York was found culpable of attempting to murder and assault.
The 27-year-old New Jersey man, Hadi Matar, could potentially receive a sentence of over 30 years in prison.
Despite surviving the attack, Sir Salman had injuries that left him with a paralyzed hand due to nerve damage in his arm, liver damage, and blindness in one eye.
In Chautauqua County Court in western New York state, close to the location where Matar stabbed Rushdie while he was giving a lecture in August 2022, the jury returned a guilty conviction following a two-week trial.
Additionally, the jury deemed Matar responsible of assault for injuring Henry Reese, the interviewer, while the latter was on platform with the author. An insignificant head injury was sustained by Mr. Reese during the attack.
The date set for Matar's sentencing is April 23.
