The Nigeria Leader , President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared an emergency and removed the governor and parliament from the petroleum-rich state of Rivers on Tuesday in reaction to an unrest and destruction of pipelines that makes Nigeria Africa's largest oil producer.
In Rivers, a conflict between state lawmakers—many of whom have the backing of his predecessor—and sitting governor Siminalayi Fubara has been festering for months. Claiming that the governor had violated several laws relating to the presentation of the state budget and the composition of the legislature, several lawmakers started with the procedure of removing him this week.
In a nationwide Broadcast , the president handed out a six month suspension to the elected governor and all members of parliament, which included state lawmakers.
For failing to take actions in other to stop the vandalization of pipelines , the Rivers state governor was heavily criticized by the Nigerian President.
