On Friday night, Venâncio Mondlane's supporters lit tires on fire and barricaded roadways, causing smoke to cover the streets of Maputo. Anger over the contentious elections in October fueled the rallies, which swiftly grew violent and resulted in fights with security personnel.
Local police in Maputo, Nampula, and Zambezia confirmed at least five fatalities and three critical injuries throughout Mozambique. The local NGO Plataforma Eleitoral Decide asserted that at least 88 people were killed during the protests, indicating that the actual death toll is much higher.
This is actually a cause for justice as it has been reported that some armed forces members are currently joining the protest.
