1978 - Joy Division
After changing their name from Warsaw, (inspired by the song Warszawa on David Bowie's Low album), Joy Division made their live debut when they played at Pips Disco in Manchester, England.
A band that left a lasting impression on so many people and influenced a generation of artists in all mediums.
Often remembered as a short but full life, Ian Curtis the lead singer took his life at a mere 23 years old right before their big North American tour. Only months later did people realize how depressed he actually was but it's very apparent in the lyrics to anyone who listens.
The band will always be known primarily for the Love Will Tear Us Apart single released after his death.
Their debut album with the iconic album art is often found on t-shirts of kids growing up and being introduced to them to this day.
The cover artwork was designed by artist Peter Saville, using a data plot of signals from a radio pulsar.
A new band eventually formed out of the aftermath called New Order. A suiting name given the circumstances with their unforgettable club hit Blue Monday. This too went on to be their most memorable songs and a top selling single too.
