On December 8, 1980, 41 years ago, John Lennon, a former member of The Beatles, the rock group that changed popular music in the 1960s, was shot and killed by a rabid fan in New York City, United States.

The then 40-year-old artist entered his luxury Manhattan apartment building when Mark David Chapman shot him four times at close range with a 38-caliber revolver. Lennon, who was bleeding profusely at the time, was rushed to hospital but died on the way.

Chapman had received an autograph from Lennon earlier in the day and voluntarily remained at the scene of the shooting until he was arrested by police. During the week, hundreds of grieving fans kept watch outside Lennon's apartment building and mourning events were held around the world.

John Lennon was one of the singer-songwriters who made The Beatles the most popular band of the 20th century. Another band leader is Paul McCartney, but other members such as George Harrison and Ringo Starr sometimes write and sing their own songs as well.

Originally from Liverpool, England, and influenced by early American rock and roll, The Beatles hit England in 1963 with the single "Please Please Me." "Beatlemania" spread to the United States in 1964 with the release of "I Want to Hold Your Hand", followed by a sensational US tour.
With young people ready to break away from the rigid cultural landscape of the 1950s, the "Fab Four," with its uplifting, rebellious music, was the perfect way to make a difference.

The Beatles sold millions of records and starred in hits such as A Hard Day's Night (1964). Their live performances almost broke down, teenage girls screaming and passing out as their boyfriends nodded to the pop rock beats of The Beatls. In 1966, The Beatles stopped touring to concentrate on their innovative studio recordings, such as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, a psychedelic concept album considered a masterpiece of popular music.

The Beatles' music remained relevant to young people during the great cultural shift of the 1960s. Critics of all ages recognized the songwriting genius of the Lennon-McCartney duo.
