DARPA researcher Dr. Mark Clyne flies to Moldova from Virginia, the current deployment location of the US military in the ongoing Moldovan War, to be consulted on one of his creations, a line of hyperspectral imaging goggles that have been issued to troops there. After arriving at a US military airbase on the outskirts of Chișinău, he meets with US Army General Orland & CIA officer Fran Madison. They show him footage captured by the troops' goggles of a mysterious translucent humanoid apparition that kills almost instantaneously. Knowing it is not interference, Orland wants Clynes expert opinion before forwarding the findings & footage to his superiors. Conversely, Madison believes the sightings to be members of the local insurgency wearing an advanced form of active camouflage & has orders from her superiors to retrieve a sample.
Clyne & Madison accompany a team of Delta Force operators into the field to find Utah team that went missing the day before. To capture a better image of the apparitions, Clyne mounts a larger more powerful version of the hyperspectral camera on top of one of the armored personnel carriers. Upon arriving at the location they discover all of the members of the Utah team (except one named Comstock) are dead along with the insurgents. They are ambushed by the apparitions who inflict heavy casualties before the soldiers retreat. After landmines render their vehicles inoperable & kill Comstock the group takes cover in an abandoned factory where they find two children barricaded inside. The apparitions attempt to follow them but are stopped by a barrier of iron shavings. The children share that their father scattered the shavings to protect his children before he was killed. The survivors make contact with the airbase & set up a rendezvous. Clyne modifies the hyperspectral camera into a large searchlight which enables the group to see the apparitions without the need for goggles. Clyne points out numerous crates of iron shavings lying around the factory, which the unit uses to turn their grenades into IEDs laced with iron shavings to give them a fighting chance. Fortified with these new weapons the group sets out for the rendezvous point about a half-mile away from the factory. About an hour before the extraction time, the apparitions find a way to cross the barrier forcing the survivors to leave the factory.
The apparitions chase the group. Reinforcements & a helicopter evac join them at the rendezvous point however, they are ambushed by the apparitions & are barely able to escape. They receive word from Orland that the apparitions have overrun the airbase, so they are redirected to a civilian bunker controlled by the allied Moldovan military. Thinking over what he learned from the young girl they have rescued, Clyne deduces the apparitions are likely man-made & are made of Bose-Einstein condensate, which explains their ability to move through walls, freeze people to death & the inability to pass through iron shavings & ceramic materials (hence their inability to penetrate ceramic tank armor & Comstock's hiding place under the bath tub). Working overnight with Orland & surviving military engineers, he constructs several makeshift pulse weapons capable of breaking down the condensate. The next morning, the remaining American soldiers head to the Masarov power plant in the center of the city by V-22 Ospreys, as Clyne believes it is the only facility capable of generating the power needed to create the condensate.
While the soldiers mount an offensive distraction on the roof of the plant, Clyne & Madison descend down to a recently overrun laboratory inside. They deduce that scientists, working in weapons research for the former regime, were scanning humans on a molecular level & using advanced 3D printing to replicate them in condensate form. The human test subjects' brains & peripheral nervous systems were then removed & hooked up to a central machine that keeps the condensate copies (or "apparitions") alive. With the battle above threatening to release the remaining condensates, Clyne finally finishes activation of the failsafe system, which deactivates the condensate apparitions. Believing that whatever level of consciousness remaining is in pain, he unplugs the human remains from the machine, finally giving them peace.
With the apparitions gone, the US & allied Moldovan military continue their work of taking control of the city from the insurgents. A Department of Defense extraction team is to be sent back to the plant with the Delta Force operators to take the machinery apart & potentially use it for their own purposes. Saying goodbye to Madison & General Orland, Clyne boards a V-22 Osprey to be taken back home to Virginia.

A sci-fi drama with the screenplay by David Scarpa is based on the 1940 science fiction short story "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates & the 1951 screenplay adaptation by Edmund H. North.Directed by Scott Derrickson & starring Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, this version replaces the Cold War theme of nuclear warfare with the contemporary issue of humankind's environmental damage to the planet. It follows Klaatu, an alien sent to try to change human behavior or eradicate humans from Earth.
In 1928, a solitary mountaineer exploring the Karakoram mountains in India encounters a glowing sphere. He loses consciousness & when he wakes, the sphere has gone & there is a scar on his hand where a sample of his DNA has been taken.
In the present day, a rapidly moving object is detected beyond Jupiter's orbit & forecast to impact Manhattan. It is moving at 30,000 kilometers per second, fast enough that its impact would destroy all life on Earth. The United States government hastily assembles a group of scientists, including Helen Benson & her friend Michael Granier, to develop a survival plan.
The scientists travel to New York City to await for the object's collision with Earth. As it nears the planet, the object slows down just before impact. Revealed to be a large spherical spaceship, it lands gently in Central Park & is quickly surrounded by NYPD & heavily armed US military forces. An alien emerges & Helen moves forward to greet it; but amidst the confusion, the alien is shot. A gigantic humanoid robot appears & temporarily disables everything in the vicinity by emitting a high-pitched noise before the wounded alien voices the command "Klaatu barada nikto" to shut down the robot's defensive response.
The alien's exterior is found to be a bioengineered space suit, composed of placenta-like material covering a human-like being. After the bullet is extracted during surgery, the being quickly ages into Klaatu, who looks like the mountaineer from 1928. Klaatu informs Secretary of Defense Regina Jackson that he is a representative of a group of civilizations, sent to talk to the leaders of Earth about saving the planet. When Jackson instead sends him to be interrogated, Klaatu escapes & reconnects with Helen & her stepson, Jacob, telling them that he must finish his mission to "save the Earth".
The presence of the sphere & other smaller spheres that begin to appear all over the world cause widespread panic. The military launches a drone attack on the Central Park sphere, but is thwarted by the robot. The military takes a weapons-free approach, cautiously enclosing the robot, soon nicknamed "GORT" (for Genetically Organized Robotic Technology) & transporting it to the Mount Weather underground facility in Virginia.
Klaatu meets with another alien, Mr. Wu, who has lived on Earth for 70 years. Wu tells Klaatu that he has found the human race to be destructive, stubborn & unwilling to change, which matches Klaatu's experiences. Klaatu orders the smaller spheres to collect specimens of animal species, to preserve them for later reintroduction to the Earth. He clarifies for Helen that he means to save the Earth from destruction by humankind. When a New Jersey State Trooper attempts to take them into custody, Klaatu kills him & then promptly revives the officer, telling Helen & Jacob that he did this to simply disarm an obstacle to his mission.
Hoping to persuade Klaatu to change his mind about humanity, Helen takes him to the home of Professor Barnhardt, a Nobel Prize winner. They discuss how Klaatu's race went through drastic, collaborative evolution to prevent the demise of their planet. Barnhardt pleads that Earth is at the same precipice & humanity should be given a chance to understand that it too must change. While the adults are talking, Jacob calls the authorities to come & arrest Klaatu.
While the military is examining GORT, the robot transforms into a swarm of winged insect-like nano-machines that self-replicate as they consume every man-made object in their path. The swarm soon devours the entire facility, emerging above ground to continue feeding.
The military captures Helen while Klaatu & Jacob escape on foot. As they travel, Klaatu learns more about humanity through Jacob. When Jacob contacts Helen & arranges to meet at his father's grave, the Secretary sends her to try to change Klaatu's mind. At the grave, Jacob is heartbroken that Klaatu cannot resurrect his long-dead father. As Helen & Jacob have a tear-filled reunion, Klaatu's cumulative observations of humans convince him to stop the swarm.
Granier drives them to the Central Park sphere, but the swarm has reached massive proportions. Klaatu trudges through the swarm to the sphere, touching it moments before his own body is consumed. The sphere deactivates the swarm, saving humanity, but at the expense of electrical activity on Earth, per Klaatu's warning that there will be "a price to the [human] way of life." The giant sphere leaves the Earth.

I think I first watched this movie with my dad when I was around 11 or 12. I highly recommend watching the whole movie. It's a black comedy of epic proportions. Zack Snyder fans may see some parallels in this. 😉
All I did was piece together the scenes including Felix Farmer and his 3 Muscatels. When the greats Mr. William Holden, Mr. Robert Preston, and Mr. Robert Webber are on screen together with Mr. Richard Mulligan...it's comic GOLD
Plus, there's a story of real life Hollywood and the cut throat antics therein that parallels studio interference in movies still to this day. Blake Edwards based this story off of his own experience with Paramount Pictures 10 years prior to them distributing this very movie that's parodying them. 😁 The snake pit is what ultimately got deleted from my fan edit here
Damn...should've called it the No Snake Pit Cut 😂
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy this movie as much as I do and thank you for watching
Thank you! SciFi movie is what I really like
This was a stunning & artistic tear jerker too...
