If the person making the request to you is a close friend , loved one or someone that you consider to be very close to you and you really want to maintain good relationship with them ,you can consider offering them some alternatives.
This has a way of expressing your supportiveness even though you are enable to meet their request , it also makes them feel more comfortable with you and also see you as a supportive fellow.
Example: “I can’t help with that project, but I can connect you with someone who might be able to assist.”
