Two things have always defined me: love for cinema and love for reading. And my closest friends know that this is so, although I must be honest and tell them that I have a long time without finishing a book, this is about to change.

Hay dos cosas que me han definido desde siempre: el amor por el cine y el amor por la lectura. Y mis amigos más íntimos saben que es así, aunque debo sincerarme y decirles que tengo mucho tiempo sin terminarme un libro, pero esto es algo que ya va a cambiar.

Let's go back a little bit, to my beginnings, to my childhood; I don't remember how I learned to read, from the furthest part of my memory I remember always having something in my hands to read. In kindergarten, there were several areas, and while my little friends played in the home area, I spent my time in a small corner destined for a small library inside my classroom, I remember all the stories that were there, the classic stories: the ugly duckling, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and many others.

In first grade, I was a reference to compare with other children who couldn't read well, but honestly, it didn't seem fair to me. Come to think of it, I guess those kids were the ones who learned to read by beating the crap out of each other, literally. But the truth is when we are kids we repeat everything we see our parents do, and I saw my mom sofitere, reading all the time, so I started to imitate her, and she gave me books to read according to my age. Another thing that also helped me with reading is the immense amount of books cluttering my home, and that's the right word to define it, if you walked into my childhood home you would go crazy with the number of books we have there, most of the classics, as well as my mom's crime novel collection. There was a lot, a lot to read, if I tell you that there are about 1000 books I wouldn't be exaggerating, maybe I'm underselling it. I have never counted them.

When I was in college I lived far away from my parents and my house, I was in a tiny residence and I had no television, no computer, cell phones at that time were only useful to call and send text messages, technology had not advanced and the only thing I did was read to entertain myself, every time I traveled, half of my suitcase was full of books to read during the time I spent away from home. When I returned from vacation, I would take the books back and exchange them for some I hadn't read.

Vamos a remontarnos un poco atrás, a mis inicios, a mi infancia; no recuerdo cómo aprendí a leer, desde lo más lejos de mi memoria recuerdo siempre tener algo en las manos para leer. En el kínder había varias áreas, y mientras mis amiguitas jugaban en el área de hogar, yo me la pasaba en un pequeño rincón destinado a una pequeña biblioteca dentro de mi aula, recuerdo todos los cuentos que estaban allí, los cuentos clásicos: el patito feo, la Cenicienta, Caperucita roja y muchos otros.

En primer grado yo era referente para comparar con otros niños que no sabían leer bien, pero sinceramente, no me parecía justo. Pensándolo bien, supongo que a esos niños eran los que aprendieron a leer a punta de golpes, literalmente. Pero la verdad es, que cuando somos niños repetimos todo lo que vemos hacer a nuestros padres, y yo veía a mi mamá sofitere, leer todo el tiempo, así que empecé a imitarla, y ella me daba libros para leer acordes con mi edad. Otra cosa que también me ayudó con la lectura, es la cantidad inmensa de libros que abarrotan mi hogar, y es la palabra correcta para definirlo, si entraran a mi casa de la infancia quedarían locos con la cantidad de libros que tenemos allí, la mayoría de los clásicos, así como la colección de la novela negra de mi madre. Había mucho, mucho para leer, si les digo que hay como 1000 libros no estaría exagerando, tal vez me quede corta. Nunca me he puesto a contarlos.

Cuando estaba en la universidad viví lejos de mis padres y de mi casa, estaba en una residencia pequeñita y no tenía televisión, ni computadora, los celulares de esa época solo servían para llamar y enviar mensajes de texto, la tecnología no había avanzado y lo único que hacía era leer para entretenerme, cada vez que viajaba, la mitad de mi maleta iba llena de libros para poder leer durante la temporada que pasaba lejos de casa. Cuando regresaba de vacaciones, llevaba los libros de regreso y los intercambiaba por alguno que no hubiera leído.

I'm doing this story because it has a lot to do with my birthday present, which coincidentally the phrase birthday present has to do with, and I'm smiling right now as I realize the pun. Without further ado, I show you my birthday present.

Hago esta historia porque tiene mucho que ver con mi regalo de cumpleaños, que casualmente la frase regalo de cumpleaños tiene que ver con el mismo, y estoy sonriendo en este momento al darme cuenta del juego de palabras. Si más preámbulos, les muestro mi regalo de cumpleaños.

I told you the story of how I got my hands on this gift in my last post A very special unboxing!, but what I didn't tell you was how. But let's give a little context so you can understand my excitement.

As I told you before, my mom always put books in my hands to read, and when I was 10 years old, she put in my hands the one that would become my favorite book forever: The Lord of the Rings. The Fellowship of the Ring. I didn't know what she was giving me, it was a brown hardcover book and she told me that she bought it when she was pregnant with my brother, that is when I was one year old. When I opened the book, I was shocked, it unfolded a very large map with many strange names on it: Mordor, The Shire, Rivendell, Lorien, Gondor... And I started reading the story, this is a story that starts like this:

Three rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for mortal men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne;
In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them,
One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them;
In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

La historia de cómo llegó este regalo a mis manos se las conté en mi última publicación Un unboxing muy especial, pero lo que no les conté fue como. Pero vamos a dar un poco de contexto para que entiendan mi emoción.

Cómo ya les conté anteriormente, mi mamá siempre me ponía libros en las manos para leer, y cuando tenía 10 años, puso en mis manos el que se convertiría en mi libro favorito para siempre: El señor de los anillos. La comunidad del anillo. Yo no sabía que me estaba dando, era un libro de tapa dura marrón y ella me contó que lo compró cuando estaba embarazada de mi hermano, es decir, cuando yo tenía un año de edad. Al abrir el libro, quedé impresionada, se desplegó un mapa muy grande con muchos nombres extraños en él: Mordor, La Comarca, Rivendel, Lorien, Gondor... Y empecé a leer la historia, esta es una historia que empieza así:

Tres Anillos para los Reyes Elfos bajo el cielo.
Siete para los Señores Enanos en palacios de piedra.
Nueve para los Hombres Mortales condenados a morir.
Uno para el Señor Oscuro, sobre el trono oscuro
en la Tierra de Mordor donde se extienden las Sombras.
Un Anillo para gobernarlos a todos. Un Anillo para encontrarlos,
un Anillo para atraerlos a todos y atarlos en las tinieblas
en la Tierra de Mordor donde se extienden las Sombras.

I am talking about when I was 10 years old, that is, in 1994, the books had not yet come out and the movies were not about to be released. The only one I had seen was the animated version that I got to see on TV. The world opened up to me after reading that book, things were different and my life was marked by what would be my future and my taste for things. ESDLA is not only a saga of books and movies, it made possible the invention of many of the things we enjoy now, many worlds, movies, books, and video games, which are directly influenced by the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. If you're watching a story where they're talking about Goblins, Trolls, elves, orcs, and/or dwarves, they're influenced by Tolkien. George Martin himself, from Game of Thrones, mentions it whenever he can play in his interviews, how the magic is present almost imperceptibly, but it's there.

Les estoy hablando de cuando tenía 10 años, es decir, en el año 94, aún no habían salido los libros y no pensaban estrenar las películas. La única que había visto era la versión animada que llegué a ver en la tele. El mundo se me abrió después de leer ese libro, las cosas fueron diferentes y en mi vida se marcó lo que sería mi futuro y el gusto por las cosas. ESDLA no es solo una saga de libros y películas, esto hizo posible la invención de muchas de las cosas que disfrutamos ahora, de muchos mundos, películas, libros, videojuegos, que están influenciados directamente por la obra de J.R.R. Tolkien. Si estás viendo una historia en la que hablen de Goblins, Trolls, elfos, orcos y/o enanos, evidentemente están influenciados por Tolkien. El mismo George Martin, de Juego de Tronos, lo nombra siempre que puede en sus entrevistas, de como la magia está presente de manera casi imperceptible, pero está allí.

When the movies came out I was crazy because I already knew what I was about to see. Over the years, before the first movie, my mom bought the hardcover collection, a beautiful collection that was taken from my brother during an armed robbery long after the third movie was released. A horrible event that took away something very precious and that surely no one was going to treasure, I always wonder where did those books end up?

I read them twice, complete, and I read them twice more in digital because rereading the books is like meeting old friends again. But reading ESDLA in digital is not the same magic, it's not like reading and going back, looking at the map, and reviewing it right there. In digital this becomes tedious.

I have many years without reading them, and although I had tried to do them in ebook, I could not, the habit of reading them physical was very high, so one day in February I asked my mom if she had seen the collection of books in any bookstore in Spain because I went online and saw them all separately, no collection was complete at that time began to search and got them on Amazon, she showed them to me and 5 minutes later she said: I bought them, it will be your birthday present. I got all excited because it is one of the most special gifts I have ever received in my life. I intended to buy them on my behalf and have her send them later, but this worked out better. Although then she told me she was planning on getting me the Harry Potter ones and there I was disappointed because those are more expensive 🤣.

Cuando salieron las películas yo estaba como una loca porque ya conocía lo que estaba por ver. Con el transcurso de los años, antes de la primera película, mi mamá compró la colección en tapa dura, una colección hermosísima que le quitaron a mi hermano durante un asalto a mano armada mucho después de estrenada la tercera película. Un evento horrible que se llevó algo muy preciado y que seguramente nadie iba a atesorar, siempre me pregunto ¿dónde habrán llegado a parar esos libros?

Esos me los leí dos veces, completos, y me los leí dos veces más en digital, porque releer los libros es reencontrarse con viejos amigos. Pero leer ESDLA en digital no es la misma magia, no hay como ir leyendo y volver atrás, buscar en el mapa y repasarlo allí mismo. En digital esto se hace tedioso.

Tengo muchos años sin leerlos, y aunque había intentado hacerlos en ebook, no podía, la costumbre de leerlos en físico era muy alta, así que un día de febrero le pregunté a mi mamá si había visto la colección de libros en alguna librería en España, porque entraba en internet y los veía todos por separado, ninguna colección estaba completa en ese momento empezó a buscar y los consiguió en Amazon, me los mostró y 5 minutos después me dijo: ya te los compré, será tu regalo de cumpleaños. Yo me emocioné toda, obviamente, porque es uno de los regalos más especiales que he recibido en mi vida. Mi intención era comprarlos por mi parte y que ella los enviara después, pero esto salió mejor. Aunque luego me dijo que ella tenía pensado regalarme los de Harry Potter y allí si me decepcioné porque esos son más costosos 🤣.

They are paperback books, very light so they do not weigh to have them in hand. I'm mega happy, and I'm going to start reading them calmly and enjoy every detail again and reconnect with friends who have accompanied me for so long and retake the love of reading. Son libros de bolsillo, muy ligeros así que no pesan al tenerlos a la mano. Tienen sus respectivos Estoy mega feliz, y ya voy a empezar a leerlos con calma y disfrutarme cada detalle nuevamente y reencontrarme con los amigos que me han acompañado tanto tiempo y retomar el amor a la lectura.
