As with most common names, the use of this term is actually inconsistent, because sawfly larvae are also often referred to as caterpillars.[1][2] Both lepidopteran larvae and symphytan larvae have an eruciform body shape.

The caterpillars of most species are herbivores (folivores), but not all; a few percent (about 1%) are insectivores, some are even cannibals. Some caterpillars eat other animal products; for example, the clothes moth eats wool, while the horn moth eats nails and the horn of the ungulate dies.

Caterpillars are usually voracious eaters. Many caterpillars are serious agricultural pests. In fact many species of moth are better known at the caterpillar stage because of the damage it does to fruit and other agricultural produce, whereas the moth is not a pest. On the other hand, various species of caterpillars are very beneficial to humans. For example as a source of silk, food for humans and livestock, or for biological control of plant pests
