Dan no podía creer en su suerte. Luego de tantos años de estudios, esfuerzos, empresas fundadas y quebradas, y dinero invertido y perdido... finalmente la buena fortuna le sonreía. Esa tarde, NaveOne Protocol, su más reciente emprendimiento con cuatro viejos amigos de la universidad, concretaría una sociedad con una millonaria corporación internacional. La vida estaba a punto de cambiarle.

Aún no eran las dos de la tarde, hora de la cita, y ya Dan estaba llegando a la oficina, llevándose la sorpresa de que ya sus socios estaban allí. Había emoción y nerviosismo en el ambiente. Todos sentados alrededor de la mesa con sus respectivas laptos, ninguno había dormido con tanta expectación. Casandra terminaba de poner todos los equipos en línea y comprobaba las conexiones y archivos por enésima vez. Silvia y Roberto repasaban una vez más el contrato impreso, y Pedro simplemente estaba allí, concentrado, orando.

Como líder de la empresa, Dan se levanta y toma la palabra, dando un emotivo discurso de agradecimiento por el trabajo realizado, haciendo énfasis en la nueva etapa que se les venía encima, y lo importante de estar unidos y trabajar como un solo frente. Felices y motivados, unen sus manos en señal de unión y amistad.

Apenas el reloj marcó las dos en punto, en las pantallas digitales de todas las laptos se escribió la palabra "on line", y luego de una muy breve carga, al llegar a 666%, aparece en streaming el rostro de la señorita Hannah, hermosa e importante ejecutiva de la corporación. Luego de un corto saludo, la imagen del contrato aparece en pantalla, moviéndose hasta el final donde están estampadas las firmas de todos los involucrados.

Hannah señala - Solo falta que corroboren su firma e identidad, coloquen el pulgar derecho en el recuadro al lado de sus firmas y listo, el contrato estará cerrado.

Inmediatamente Dan coloca su pulgar en la pantalla. Un corto segundo de escaneo y "accept". un check de color verde aprobó la huella. Casandra da un breve respiro conteniendo la emoción y también coloca su pulgar, "accept". Silvia y Roberto se apuran a colocar sus huellas entre sonrisas y alegría. Ahora, solo faltaba Pedro, quien lucía duditativo. Dan lo mira y le hace una señal con las manos, como de "¿qué estas esperando?"

Pedro comenta - Es que.. ya se los había comentado chicos.. me incomoda la línea de "por siempre" y.. -

De un segundo a otro Dan enfureció y casi pareció perder el control, bajando la pantalla de su lapto y dirigiendo una mirada terrible a Pedro, le dice casi susurrando - Esto ya lo hablamos, es un slogan, un puto slogan - .

Silvia mira directo a Dan con los ojos abiertos como platos y le dice - Dan, igual pueden escucharte -

Sin inmutarse, Hannah les dice - Si aún tienen dudas no perdamos más tiempo y cancelemos el contrato.

Dan aprieta los dientes y ordena a Pedro - coloca.. la estúpida.. huella.. ahora! -

Por unos segundos hubo un silencio en la habitación y todos observan a Pedro. Por fin, este se decide y coloca el dedo sobre la pantalla... "accept"

Luego de un instante, Hannah confirma la aceptación - El contrato se ha cerrado, bienvenidos a nuestra corporación. Fin de línea - la imagen se cierra y las pantallas de la lapto quedan oscuras con el texto "off line".

El grupo finalmente se levantan de sus asientos y se felicitan entre sí, Dan se disculpa con Pedro, Casandra sirve unas copas de champagna para celebrar. Sin embargo, en cuanto están brindando, una fría brisa entra a la habitación y los recorre por completo, haciéndolos sentir escalofríos, regando los papeles y dejando la habitación en silencio.

Luego de ese extraño momento, de pronto han perdido el ánimo de celebración. Comienzan a despedirse y a salir de la oficina. Pedro que se ha quedado de último levanta del piso el contrato impreso, lo coloca sobre la mesa y se dispone a salir, no sin antes leer nuevamente la línea que tanto lo hizo dudar:
"Entrego mi energía y mi alma a esta empresa, por siempre".

Pedro sale al pasillo y se queda un breve momento junto a un gran ventanal, observando el tráfico y las calles, y sintiendo en el pecho un gran vacío.

Dan couldn't believe his luck. After so many years of studies, efforts, companies founded and bankrupt, and money invested and lost... good fortune finally smiled on him. That afternoon, NaveOne Protocol, his most recent venture with four old college friends, would close a partnership with a millionaire international corporation. Life was about to change for him.

It wasn't yet two in the afternoon, appointment time, and Dan was already arriving at the office, to the surprise that his partners were already there. There was excitement and nervousness in the air. All sitting around the table with their respective laptops, none had slept with such anticipation. Casandra finished putting all the computers online and was checking the connections and files for the umpteenth time. Silvia and Roberto reviewed the printed contract once more, and Pedro was simply there, focused, praying.

As the company's leader, Dan stands up and takes the floor, giving an emotional speech of thanks for the work done, emphasizing the new stage that was upon them, and the importance of being united and working as one front. Happy and motivated, they join hands as a sign of unity and friendship.

As soon as the clock struck two o'clock, the word "on line" was written on the digital screens of all the laptops, and after a very brief load, upon reaching 666%, the face of Miss Hannah, a beautiful and important executive of the company, appears in streaming. corporation. After a short greeting, the image of the contract appears on the screen, moving to the end where the signatures of all those involved are stamped.

Hannah points out - You just need to verify your signature and identity, place your right thumb in the box next to your signatures and that's it, the contract is closed.

Dan immediately places his thumb on the screen. A short second of scanning and "accept". a green check approved the footprint. Casandra takes a brief breath containing the emotion and also places her thumb, "accept". Silvia and Roberto rush to place their footprints between smiles and joy. Now, only Pedro was missing, who looked doubtful. Dan looks at him and makes a sign with his hands, like "what are you waiting for?"

Pedro comments - It's just that... I had already told you guys... the line "forever" bothers me and... -

From one second to another Dan was furious and almost seemed to lose control, lowering the screen of his laptop and directing a terrible look at Pedro, he says almost whispering - We already talked about this, it's a slogan, a fucking slogan -.

Silvia looks directly at Dan with her eyes wide open and tells him - Dan, they can still hear you -

Without flinching, Hannah tells them - If you still have doubts, let's not waste any more time and cancel the contract.

Dan grits his teeth and orders Pedro - place... the stupid... imprint... now! -

For a few seconds there was silence in the room and everyone looked at Pedro. Finally, he makes up his mind and places his finger on the screen... "accept"

After a moment, Hannah confirms the acceptance - The contract has been closed, welcome to our corporation. End of line - the image closes and the laptop screens go dark with the text "off line".

The group finally get up from their seats and congratulate each other, Dan apologizes to Pedro, Casandra pours a few glasses of champagne to celebrate. However, as soon as they are toasting, a cold breeze enters the room and runs through them completely, making them feel chills, spreading the papers and leaving the room silent.

After that strange moment, they have suddenly lost the spirit of celebration. They begin to say goodbye and leave the office. Pedro, who has been left last, picks up the printed contract from the floor, places it on the table and prepares to leave, but not before reading again the line that made him hesitate so much:
"I give my energy and my soul to this company, forever."

Pedro goes out into the corridor and stands for a brief moment by a large window, observing the traffic and the streets, and feeling a great emptiness in his chest.
