Preventative care is incredibly important to health, and regular screenings save thousands of lives every year.
Resources that have been deployed and used to prolong life have been redirected to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, vaccinations dropped up to 60% and routine screenings including colonoscopies and heart and wellness checks stopped. Cancer screenings and health issues with "elective" designations were not handled. Healthcare providers were laid off as elective procedures were delayed, which has a major ripple effect for patients who unknowingly have health issues.
It has been said that an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure. This is true when it comes to preventative care. We need to balance the way we deploy resources to do the most good. The biggest killers in America are heat disease and stroke, and other chronic diseases including diabetes and metabolic disorders are just as deadly. We need to continue to offer screening services to save and prolong lives as the COVID-19 Pandemic rages.
