During I practice as an internist in Bener Meriah district of Gayo Highland, I found many patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and congestive heart failure (CHF). And most of diabetic patients also have hypertension and CHF.

I didn’t yet doing a study to find the factors that cause many patients got the disease. However, I have one hypothesis that in cold-weathered region like Gayo Highlands, may results in some bad habits of people here.

According to my observation, the habit may include: people are reluctant of doing exercise, it could be due to cold weather. And most of them are considering that they had been doing exercise since they work as coffee farmers.

I also found people here in Gayo Highlands smoking too much, and drinking coffee too much as well. They also like to have their food more salty. I am thinking, those factors may cause more people have hypertension.

As we know that Hypertension may cause many complications including heart failure, renal failure, and stroke. I think I need to do a study to know the relationship between their disease and their habit.

About the diabetes. It’s much related to genetic factor. But I am thinking that hypertension may trigger diabetic genes to activate. A study by Connor et al found that hypertension patient may 50% increased risk of having diabetes mellitus type 2.

I believe I do need to do a study, at least to know the prevalence of those metabolic diseases in this region. And the next study may be about to find the relationship among them. And to find if any relationship with people’s habit in Gayo Highlands region.

A study of patients that visit your department should be more objective and would help in promoting health education in your geographical location
