Test tube baby is a universally accepted method of treating infertility. There are different strategies for this method. One of these strategies is IVF. IVF abbreviates the in-vitro fertilization process. In this way the first test tube baby was born in our country. The word ‘in-vitro’ is derived from the Latin language. It means in the glass. In other words, in Bengali, 'in-vitro fertilization' means fertilization outside the body.
In this method, when the ovum matures during ovulation, it is removed from the ovary by a method called laparoscopy. After collection, the eggs are placed in a test tube, a special type of container called a petridish. The husband's sperm is then collected and processed. The sperm is then placed in a container containing the eggs. At this time there are about seventy five thousand sperm as opposed to one egg. The dish or tube is then kept in the incubator for a few hours. The environment of the incubator is kept similar to that of the uterus. Here the fertilization of suitable sperm and ovum results in the formation of human embryos. The embryo is then transplanted into the woman's uterus with the help of a special tube. As a result of the normal process of fertilization in the mother's womb, the test tube baby also grows.
Patrick Steptoe, a gynecologist, and Robert Edward, a scientist, were the first to introduce this method on July 25, 1966, at Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester, England. The baby was named Luigi Brown. Robert Edward was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Medicine for this work. Patrick Stepto was deprived of this famous award because he did not survive. Gynecologist in Bangladesh on May 30, 2001. Firoza Begum gave birth to the country's first test tube baby under the care of Parveen Fatima. Three daughters were born together. Their names are diamond, gem, pearl.
