Quitting Alcohol

I read an article in a newspaper about some people who were addicted to alcohol but thanks to the pandemic have been able to stop drinking it. There were a lot of comments and most of them were about people who say they lost weight, they feel better they sleep better, overall their lives are better. Of course there were a few who say they certainly feel better if they can drink a moderate amount of alcohol during the week, they talked mostly about wine.

Others said that they are off of alcohol and instead of drinking a beer they now drink an alcohol free beer. Now this one I don't understand if they don't drink alcohol why do they insist on something like a fake beer, seems that they really can't kick the habit away. I have a friend who was off drinking for 19 years and then he started taking alcohol free beer and now he is back to drinking alcohol as much as before he stopped.

Now I will tell you something I was an alcoholic for a long time, and I don't mean like these people who consider two glasses of wine way too much, when I drank I drank until I lost awareness, the next day I wouldn't remember how I got home, if I didn't get in trouble with anyone, if I didn't leave owing some money, you know the things that happen to alcoholics who go beyond a certain barrier.

And then one 31 of December 14 years ago I suddenly decided to stop drinking, mainly because my stomach was giving me a hard time, the hang overs were awful. So I did stop and haven't gone back to drinking any alcohol yet. I don't even try alcohol free beers much less one drink of real alcoholic beverages, I am really afraid that if I drink one the old addiction will come back. It has been tough and the worst part was one day a couple of years back talking with a guy who goes to AA he asked what group I was in and I told him I had never gone to one, so he told me I was not over alcohol, for that I had to go to AA, I nearly boxed him.

But then I stopped drinking and did not lose weight, my stomach did not improve I have GERD, I have been an insomniac always, and I didn't feel any better health wise I did improve because now I know exactly where I have been. Sometimes I do miss a cold beer on one of these extremely hot days we have here, nothing is as refreshing as that. But yes, I stopped drinking and I am glad I have been able to, but I do not feel that I have proved something, I just quit because I had to, and incidentally much earlier I also quit smoking, again I just decided to quit and I did it.

This is the beer I usually got drunk on.
