I recently discovered that somethings we typically call waste here in Nigeria are very useful to human beings. I'm bringing it here to enlighten you on how useful it's and what you can use it for.
I will be walking you through the meaning and uses of a special Milder Taste Onions named Scallion or Green Onions. This special onion is mostly eaten in Africa and right now it's mostly preferred in Chinese food ingredients. Here in Nigeria, we prefer to buy and use the bulb for cooking instead of the Scallion. I have seen people here in Nigeria, using the Scallion Onions for cooking and used the bulbs part only and cut off the most useful part which is the Vegetable part. No wonder most Korean and Chinese people are fresh and glow without any chemicals. In this post, I will make you understand how useful it's as a chef.
Scallions are vegetables derived from various species in the genus Allium. Scallions have a milder taste than most onions. Scallions (also known as green onions or spring onions or siblings) are vegetables derived from various species in the genus Allium. The relatives include garlic, shallot, leek, and chive.
Although the bulbs of many Allium species are used as food, the defining characteristic of spring onion species is that they lack a fully developed bulb. Allium species referred to as spring onions, have hollow, tubular green leaves growing directly from the bulb. These leaves are used as a vegetable; they are eaten either raw or cooked. The leaves are often chopped into other dishes, in the manner of onions or garlic.
Spring onions are an excellent source of carotenoids and Vitamin A, which helps in keeping the eyes healthy and prevent loss of vision. This is the most preferred Chinese ingredient which is loaded with essential nutrients. Both the green leafy part and the white bulb of the spring onion are edible. It tastes a little milder than the regular onion and can be cooked or eaten raw.
Important and uses of Scallion onions
Scallions may be cooked, either whole or chopped, they are perhaps most enjoyed fresh in salads.
The vegetable has anti-bacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory which helps in reducing inflammation and preventing breakouts. The vitamin content, especially vitamin C present in onion helps nourish your skin, making it healthy and glowing. Not just your skin, but onions take care of your lips too. Onions make you cry, but they treat your skin very well in reducing black spots.
How to Re-Spring Onions
Gather your supplies. The Important part is to make sure your spring onions have roots. You can use anything to plant it, even just one large pot. Cut the bottoms off your spring onions, a few centimeters from the roots, get your containers ready.
Fill half of your container with soil, hold spring onions in place with roots as low as possible and fill the remaining space with soil. Add a little water. Keep the soil damp. Sit containers in a cool and ventilated place.
Within a few days, you will see a new green regrowth. When you harvest your spring onions, cut off what you need, and leave the roots in the soil, it will keep growing back!
After a week or so, plant them in a larger pot or garden bed whenever you like! Mind you, it's good to plant in the winter season (rainy season) for a proper result.
