Reminiscing Those Days | Sugarcane Farmworker

How’s your weekend guys?

As usual, my life here in Saudi Arabia does not recognize weekend or day off. I miss Philippines local vegetables so I check and bought some.

Calabash is best with sardines and misua/odong noodles, in our province in Negros Island. It’s a special dish/menu during sugarcane harvest in our place, I miss those times.

During high school, me, my father and my late brother were a sugarcane farmworker, we call the job in our dialect as “karga-tapas” which means cut and haul the cane.

The below photo is how exactly we used to haul the cut sugarcanes into a dump truck. After the truck is full, all workers will proceed to the farmer’s house to reward our tummy after the long tiring job.

At that time, in the early 2000s, we are being paid by the farmer of 50 Philippine Piso per head for a full truck, that's less than $1 at the moment. We can full the truck for 3-5hours depending on how big the truck bed/bucket is.

It's tiring but it's full of fun and enjoying, enjoying because all of your co-workers are talking jokes, other are running after the tie so we can finish it early and of course the misua with sardines and calabash is waiting you know LOL.

The funniest part is when somebody falls from that stair when the truck is almost full lol. I cannot count how many times I fell down from that haha. If the truck is almost full, we call it 12 o'clock as the stair is almost at 12 o'clock position.

Imagine if you fall down when you're at one step left on the top and you are carrying the pile of canes, funny right? that's what always happened to me haha. Ahhhhgg I miss my late brother, he keeps reminding me that take only half of the pile of cane so I will not fall.
