Cada dia se ven más y más netbooks en el mercado y claro, salvo raras excepciones, ninguna viene con Linux preinstalado. Pero eso no es problema, ya vimos que instalar Ubuntu en una netbook es facilisimo, y el mismo método se puede usar para cualquier distro.
Son mucho más que un portátil pequeño, barato y con acabados pobres. Más eficientes que los ordenadores convencionales y a menudo con Linux, son un acceso liviano a las aplicaciones web.
Los netbook, pequeños ordenadores portátiles con pantallas comprendidas entre las 7 y las 12 pulgadas, abundan cada vez más en salas de espera de aeropuertos, clases universitarias, ruedas de prensa, ferias y convenciones profesionales.
Los portátiles más pequeños han convertido sus limitaciones en una razón para aumentar sus ventas: son equipos con una capacidad de proceso limitada, que facilita un menor consumo energético y una mayor duración de la batería. Además de un precio más reducido.
Las opciones más conocidas son:
CrunchBang.
Una distro basada en Debian que se caracteriza por su ligero peso. Uso el gestor de ventanas OpenBox y Ofrece un excelente balance entre velocidad y usabilidad.
Dado que las pantallas de los netbooks no son especialmente espaciosas (excepto tal vez los modelos más nuevos de 11,6 pulgadas) se trata de aprovechar lo mejor posible el escritorio, con un panel lanzador de aplicaciones que se esconde automáticamente.
Claro que también se aprovecha al máximo el versátil y liviano entorno Openbox, como así también el conjunto de aplicaciones GTK+.

EasyPeasy.
Anteriormente conocida como Ubuntu Eee. Es una distro basada en Ubuntu que usa la interfaz gráfica de Ubuntu Netbook Remix e incluye tanto Open Source como paquetes privativos.
La nueva versión 1.6 llega cargada de aplicaciones de uso común en este tipo de dispositivos y además disfruta de un tiempo de arranque muy bajo, tan sólo 45 segundos, un 25% menos que la versión anterior.

JoliCloud.
Una distro basada en Ubuntu y especificamente diseñada para netbook. Esta pensada para ser muy facil de usar. Usa principalmente servicios web en vez de aplicaciones instaladas, una amplia gama de aplicaciones sociales y la inclusion de codecs no libres la hacen especial para el usuario promedio.
Es un nuevo sistema operativo basado en Linux optimizado para el trabajo de un ultraportátil en la nube. JoliCloud es un sistema pensado exclusivamente para netbooks, que trae una fuerte integración con las aplicaciones cloud computing.
La interfaz ha sufrido de una simplificación y orientación hacia la web que mejora la experiencia del usuario, además se ha logrado una reducción de los tiempos de arranque.
Esta distribución Linux está siendo actualmente desarrollada por Tariq Krim, el ex CEO de Netvibes, por lo que se sabe poco de sus características.

Meego.
Es una combinación de los proyectos Moblin y Maemo. Esta principalmente orientado a un buen y agradable uso de la interfaz gráfica y combinar las aplicaciones online con las aplicaciones desarrolladas en Qt. Esta se usa no solo en netbooks, sino que se ha visto en muchos otros dispositivos.
En Phoronix han realizado uno de sus tradicionales artículos comparativos en los que han incluido MeeGo 1.0, Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, Fedora 13 y Moblin 2.1, y en los resultados de las pruebas con su ya conocida Phoronix Test Suite han salido a la luz algunas conclusiones interesantes. Las pruebas, por cierto, se realizaron en un Samsung NC10 con una unidad SSD de 32 Gbytes, algo que es importante para algunas pruebas.

ArchOne.
Un derivado del cada dia mas popular Arch. Viene con 3 entornos de escritorio: OpenBox, Gnome y KDE.
ArchOne es una distribución USB en vivo basada en Arch Linux y optimizada para Acer Aspire One.
Está dirigido a aquellas personas que quieran probar o instalar Arch Linux en su netbook, sin perder demasiado tiempo en la instalación y configuraciones del sistema.
Para las especificaciones de hardware de netbooks comunes, ArchOne probablemente funcionará incluso si tiene un netbook que no sea el Acer Aspire One.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix.
Más comúnmente conocido como UNR es un Ubuntu con interfaz de netbook. Tiene la desventaja de correr si o si Gnome que no es precisamente superliviano.
Pero a la hora de sacar andando una netbook con Linux esta probablemente sea la manera más rápida.
A partir de la versión 11.04 del sistema operativo, Ubuntu Netbook Edition dejó de ser una edición aparte para integrarse con la edición de escritorio

Given that netbook screens are not particularly spacious (except perhaps the newer 11.6 inch models) it tries to make the best use of the desktop, with an application launcher panel that hides automatically.
Of course, it also takes full advantage of the versatile and lightweight Openbox environment, as well as the GTK+ suite of applications.

The interface has been simplified and made more web-oriented to improve the user experience, and boot times have been reduced.
This Linux distribution is currently being developed by Tariq Krim, the former CEO of Netvibes, so little is known about its features.

Meego.
It is a combination of the Moblin and Maemo projects. It is mainly oriented to a good and pleasant use of the graphical interface and to combine online applications with applications developed in Qt. It is used not only on netbooks, but has been seen on many other devices.
Phoronix have done one of their traditional comparison articles including MeeGo 1.0, Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, Fedora 13 and Moblin 2.1, and the results of the tests with their well-known Phoronix Test Suite have brought to light some interesting conclusions. The tests, by the way, were performed on a Samsung NC10 with a 32 Gbyte SSD, which is important for some tests.

A derivative of the increasingly popular Arch. It comes with 3 desktop environments: OpenBox, Gnome and KDE.
ArchOne is a live USB distribution based on Arch Linux and optimized for Acer Aspire One.
It is aimed at people who want to test or install Arch Linux on their netbook, without spending too much time on installation and system configurations.
For common netbook hardware specifications, ArchOne will probably work even if you have a netbook other than the Acer Aspire One.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix.
More commonly known as UNR is an Ubuntu with a netbook interface. It has the disadvantage of running Gnome which is not exactly super light.
But when it comes to getting a netbook running Linux this is probably the fastest way.
As of version 11.04 of the operating system, Ubuntu Netbook Edition is no longer a separate edition but is integrated with the desktop edition.
