Since last year, Prince Harry has been in court for filing 5 lawsuits against 5 different parties. One of them is the case of phone hacking which was allegedly carried out by the Mirror Group newspaper. Finally, through his legal team, the Duke of Sussex opened his voice.
"This is an important victory. This is a good day for the truth," said Prince Harry's lawyer, as reported by various sources.
On December 15, a judge at the London High Court ruled that it was proven that there had been phone hacking carried out by Mirror Group newspapers from 2006 to 2022. The court decision also stated that Harry's cell phone had been hacked to a certain extent.
Harry won 15 of the 33 points of claim submitted in evidence at trial so he won the lawsuit worth IDR 2.7 billion.
Following the judge's decision, Harry's lawyer said that the Duke's victory in court was clear evidence of his persistence so far.
"Today is a good day for truth and accountability. I would like to thank my legal team for successfully exposing the sworn testimony of senior executives of Mirror Group newspapers, the legal department and journalists who appealed to the court, unlike their colleagues their colleagues who may be too afraid to do it," said Harry.
Last June, Harry appeared as a witness in the trial, becoming the first British royal in 100 years to appear in court.
In his open statement, Harry said, "The journey towards justice can be a slow and painful one and since the prosecution alone almost 5 years ago, defamatory stories, and intimidation tactics have continued to be directed at me, and at the expense of my family. Therefore "As I learned from this process, patience is actually a virtue, especially in the face of 'revenge journalism'," he said again.
Harry continued his statement. "I've been told that slaying a dragon will set you on fire. But considering today's victory and the importance of doing what is necessary for a free and honest press – it is a price worth paying. The mission continues," he continued.
A spokesperson for the Mirror Group also emphasized that they would provide further information regarding the events that occurred many years ago.
"If something went wrong in history, we apologize unconditionally, have taken full responsibility and paid appropriate compensation," said Mirror Group.
