Superman has been one of the most iconic heroes in history with his start in 1938. He’s the one who inspired many heroes and helped jumpstart DC comics. With the Reeves films done, Superman Returns didn’t make good enough returns, it was Zack Synder’s turn to bring the American icon to the big screen. Well it’s complicated, many people were split about this movie even though it was a success and started the short lived cinematic universe. One side loved while the other side hated it. So Let’s take a look.
While I praise Henry Cavill as Superman, some of the set designs are pretty neat, some really awesome action and fight scenes, Micheal Shannon as Zod, and the scene of his first time flying with the amazing Hans Zimmer score.
I criticize the rest for the amount of destruction and death done in this movie (I know they address it in Batman V Superman), too many shaky cams, a questionable scene where Clark ask Johnathon “what I suppose do just let them die?” And he answered “maybe” many including myself didn’t know what to make of it, the infamous scene where Superman breaks Zod’s neck which to be honest I didn’t hate the idea I just hated how it’s set and directed as it looked avoidable, the over symbolism of Superman being Jesus, how it keep time jumping back and forth which cause a lack of character development, a lot of the other performances are bland mainly Amy Adams, and special criticism is reserved for the ridiculous amount of product placements.
Overall boy this is a lot to process.
When I first saw this movie in theaters I enjoyed it but looking back there were a lot of holes to this. There are moments that are amazing and had some interesting ideas. But it goes too dark at times and kind of misses the point of why Superman is such an American icon. I don’t hate this movie it just doesn’t hold up.
