When I first met my wife, she didn't know how to cook

But I'm a big beleiver in the old adage (paraphrased for political correctness): "If you give someone a fish, they'll eat for a day; If you teach someone to fish, they'll eat for a lifetime"

It was the best possible investment. You've seen the results, some of you have even sampled them! But, whereas cooking is an art, baking is a SCIENCE! You have to get the science, mechanics and physics nailed first, the art comes later.

Aillene has mastered a broad culinary landscape. But where baking has been concerned, in her own words "weapons of mass destruction". Pretty to look at, pretty to hold, but if you should drop it, hope it doesn't land on your toe.

I finally found the right inspiration in a book titled "Bread Baker's Apprentice". She's firmly on the path to success. And as you can see, appaently, another old adage, "A watched pot never boils" apparently doesn't . . . hold water . . . where baking is concerned.

And as I intend to share this to my two favorite FB foodie groups, Home Cooks from Around the World, and Japanese Cooking, so I don't break into jail in the latter, moderators please note, the two loaves you see are actually Shokupan based on our very own Shiho Coco 's recipe. Aillene left the cover off to see if the amount was correct, next time, the real thing!

"If you give someone a fish, they'll eat for a day; If you teach someone to fish, they'll eat for a lifetime"

There is a dark version of this proverb, @yongjoon, and it goes like this:

“If you buy a plane ticket to someone, they’ll fly for a day; throw someone out of a plane, they’ll fly for the rest of a lifetime”

Sound appropriate for a long farewell to this year…
