Hello Everyone.
No doubt social studies was quite simple in school but still a little complex but our tutor @udyliciouz did just to the topic, from the class I got to know about forms of marriages and types of marriage, I used to think they were all the same and classified as the same thing.
People marry for reasons best to them, some for procreation in order for their generation to continue and not die off while some parents force their kids to get married to enable them secure a business deal.
There are different forms of marriage will be discussed in subsequent paragraphs.
Traditional Marriage: This form of marriage is performed based on customs and Traditions of the couples. Customs varies depending on where one hails from therefore traditional marriages are performed differently, for example how a traditional marriage is performed in Nigeria is quite different from how a traditional marriage is performed in South Africa.
Court Marriage: This is another form of marriage and can also be called legal marriage, this type of marriage is conducted in a court and is officiated by a court registrar. Just like in every other form of marriage a ring is exchanged as well vows and a certificate to prove that the couple's union is legal.
Religious Marriage: This is another form of marriage, it is subdivided into Christian and Islamic marriage both marriages take place in their place of worship where their holy book is read, and it is officiated by a priest or an imam.
My dad is not at home Currently but I have been able ask my mom some questions, she said they first did a traditional marriage where all the traditional requirements were met before the marriage took place and her hand was given out to my dad.
Two weeks later they further went ahead to carry out a Christian wedding which was officiated by a Presbyterian Church Reverend. These two forms of wedding made them husband and wife.
Polygamy: This is a type of marriage where a man is allowed to have more than one wife, in my country polygamous marriage is practiced mostly by the Muslims.
Monogamy: This is another type of marriage where a man is not allowed to have more than one wife, it is mostly practiced by the Christians as whoever marries more than one wife is not allowed to take holy Communion.
Ghost marriage: This was practiced mostly during the olden days where a man marries a woman in the name of his late brother, they give birth and have kids but the kids are believed to be that of his deceased brother.
Endogamy: My community still practices this type of marriage where the first daughter is not allowed to marry any man that is not from the community, it is believed that every first daughter must marry from within.
Exogamy: This type of marriage allows a person to marry an outsider, that is some outside their community and not from their tribe.
There are lots of reasons people get married and these includes:
- For Procreation.
- Religious Beliefs.
- For Love.
- To Make their relationship legal and accepted by both families.
