Hello everyone!!! I hope this article meets you well. Today I will be talking about Animal Science in parts....Stay tuned!!!
Animal Science can be described as the study of the biology of animals that are under the control of humankind as well as the production and management of the farm animals for different purposes. In the academia, scholars from the world of Animal Science are termed Animal Scientist, interestingly scholars of Veterinary Medicine and Zoology are confusingly termed Animal Scientist, although similarities exist there are distinctions both in function and knowledge acquired.

Veterinary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, disorder and injury in nonhuman animals. Zoology, on the other hand, is defined as the scientific study of the behaviour, structure, physiology, classification and distribution of animals.
Animal Science has long been seen as a field which is concerned only with the production of animals for human consumption with its major nutritive value being protein. The quest and importance of satisfying the long standing need for protein by humans cannot be over emphasized. A study by the Journal of Sports and medicine has shown that animal protein offers more nutritive value than the plant counterpart. Proteins and amino acids are used for almost every metabolic process in the body. Protein can vary greatly in the types of amino acids they contain. Animal proteins tend to contain a good balance of all the amino acids that we need. Plant proteins are low in certain amino acids like Methionine, Tryptophan, Lycine and Isoleucine. The superiority of animal protein to plant protein has made animal production for consumption purposes an integral part of Animal Science.

However, there is more to Animal Science than mere satisfaction of protein needs. Animal Science offers a wide range of employment opportunities. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), livestock accounts for one third of Nigeria’s agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP). An Animal Scientist ensures agricultural productivity and optimal food safety by working with farmers to improve animal breeding, growth and nutrition. When animals grow well and stay healthy, farmers have increased produce of healthier meat, milk, egg, and other animal yields for human consumption, while additionally contributing to the controlled environmental degrading impact of animal agriculture.
Animal Science creates employment in recreation, field research, feed industries and laboratories. They can be employed in positions of responsibility as Animal Behaviour Specialist, Farm Managers, Veterinarian, Agribusiness Managers, Artificial Insemination Technician, Embryo Transfer Technician, Research Biologist, and Nature Conservation Officers. Related position possibilities are endless.
