Sammy woke up all tired and exhausted despite all the long night rest, slept quite early as a result of the stressful day he had the previous day, he stretched out while still on his bed and finding the perfect time to leave his bed, as it was a Saturday and he had no schedule for the day, he could rest all day if he wanted but his aunt will never allow that. Still lying down on his bed trying to gather energy that will enable him carry his body out of his bed.
He was still lying down on the bed when his aunt called out for him, due to the fear of getting punished he responded almost immediately and got out of the bed immediately, she asked him to go to the market and get foodstuffs to enable them prepare meal for the day, "meal I might not even eat" he said to himself. She has to prepare the meal before Sammy's uncle comes back from work for he had a night shift the previous day.
Sammy moved to stay with his uncle after his dad passed on and his mom could not afford to feed them, his uncle trying to offer help decided to adopt Sammy but his wife was never in support of that action and as a result of that she made Sammy's stay in their house an uncomfortable one.
Sammy does all the chores on an empty stomach, goes days without eating and this made him turn into a begger as he has to plead with outsiders to support him with the little they can so he can at least eat. No matter how bad his aunt treated him he vowed never to retaliate or go against his believe, he believes in the saying that no situation is permanent or stays forever.
Sammy applied for a job and was offered the job but she refused to let him work for no good reason, asking him who will do the chores if he leaves for work, Sammy pleaded with her that everyday once his back from work he'd do all the chores but she still stood in the way of him getting a work. Sammy continued to suffer under his aunt and dying of depression, and dying slowly on the inside while he does the chores.
Sammy manged to visit a cyber cafe on his way back from the market and ceased the opportunity to apply for a scholarship, he left his friends phone number with the owner of the cafe Incase he gets lucky enough to be picked to study abroad.
His uncle was never around due to the nature of his work and this contributed to Sammy's suffering. After sometime Sammy fell ill and visited the hospital, he was diagnosed with ulcer due to the starvation he suffers, his uncle got drugs to sustain him for sometime.
One faithful Tuesday evening Sammy's closest friend visited him and asked him to come outside so they can talk in private, "guess what"? Stephen asked Sammy and Sammy responded just tell me, "you know I hate guessing, cause I am bad at at". Stephen started smiling as he presented a pile of papers to Sammy. They were letters which stated that Sammy has been offered the scholarship he applied for some weeks ago, Sammy jumped up in excitement and could not wait to leave the hell he is living in.
A week later Sammy left his uncle house with the little money he could raise, arrived the airport and everything was taken care of by the company that offered him the scholarship. Sammy left for Oxford and is happy with the the changes that crossed his path.
Nice story. It's sad to think of the fact that many people are living like Sammy at the moment. That's the situation of things when poverty is in the system. Sammy's immediate family couldn't take care of him so, he ended up getting entangled with an Aunt that doesn't care about his well being.
It ended well. That's all that matters at the moment.
