A Monday morning walk, and an intriguing little trap

Monday morning was overcast and it was for-casted to rain starting around 11am. That was about the time I would also drop Dzigbordi off in town to catch a bus to Accra so she can go to work.

We took breakfast around 8am and then took a walk to the farm to see how the seedlings we planted were doing from the day before. Everything was in order there other than the plants being a little droopy but they looked like they were making a comeback.

From there we continued our walk down the hill to the lagoon.

Along the way we found little piles of greenery. Which Dzigbordi then pointed out was a trap.

I am not sure what they were catching but probably a mouse or some other small rodent because the size of the can is not very big and although I could not inspect the trap well I would assume the critter would need to be inside it for it to function. The can had a big rubber piece wrapped around it and attached to a piece of wood at the top. The side of the can that was visible showed a nail going into the can that was attached to the piece of wood by a string. I am sure the other end of the can is open with the flap of the can attached to the piece of wood which is acting as a lever. When the critter crawls inside and nibbles on the bait on the nail the nail will slip out of the hole and release the piece of wood which will snap the door shut trapping whatever ventured inside. It will probably end up as a meal for someone.

There are a lot of pepper fields in the area and this one is just above the area we saw the traps, we ventured from there to the beach and back to the resort.
