Hello great blurtians, This post is made specially for my african brethren. In my life I have been chanced to witness alot of tribes and cultures and their ways of life. Culture in africa is very rich and prominent. Although there are some cultural practices which man grew to see as abominable, there are still many other cultures and cultural practices done in africa till date in rememberance of a past events.

Cultural practices in africa are usually expressed in form of festivals, dances, sculptures, religion, music, beadwork and art works. In most african festivals or celebrations, people wear different costumes and put on a mask and dance. These people are known as masquerades and they are really common in african countries.

Festivals which are mainly for the celebration of a past event or something done by the ancestors. They are celebrated in rememberance of past events and also to pass down the knowledge from generation to generation and keep it fresh in the people's hearts. I will be talking about some huge festivals celebrated in africa.

1. Eid al-Fitr

This is celebrated by muslims around the world not just africa to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting. It falls on the first day of shawwal which is the 10th month of the islamic calendar.

2. Timkat

This is celebrated in ethiopia to mark the baptism of christ. It is a 3 day celebration carried around the country. Here many people wear white garments and carrying a replica of the Ark of the covenant from various churches and they and they move from their current location to the royal bathing pool.

Now there are many more festivals held in different parts of Africa but I just chose to talk about this 2. In Nigeria alone there are soo many festivals that we can't keep count of them. Now I have come to notice that we are gently forgetting our culture and traditions because of foreign interactions. We see our own as faulty and see those of outsiders as perfect and this is terribly wrong. We as africans have soo much rich cultures and traditions that help various people from around the world. I have even seen tourists who are jealous of our cultural heritage so why should we all be ashamed. We must always be proud of our cultural heritage and hold it in high regard. As for me I might not be proud of the situation of our country but I can say with my chest that I am a PROUD AFRICAN. Thank you for reading.
