Storm Barra made landfall yesterday, and on todays lunchtime walk i witnessed first hand the damage shes done to the local trees. Now, not only did this lunchtime walk serve its purpose of getting me off my fat arse and get my steps in, but it also allowed me to do a recci of all the fallen trees, so i can bring out the chainsaw and keep my logpile stack topped up.
Ive drawn a little "red dot" on tbe map of my general location, and as you can see, we took the brunt of storm Barra on the South Wales coast.
All the walks around this area are beautiful, and very scenic. Were surrounded by managed forests, and ancient native woodlands.
It looks as though someone else has jad tbe same idea as me, and hasnalready beat me to the chainsawing of the fallen trees. This old tree had fallen down over the old railwayline i walk along, and has already been scavenged by some eager beaver(no pun intended)
It looks like the majority of my work has been done for me..... Who ever has taken the saw to these fallen trees has already taken away several tonnes of perfectly usable wood for burning.
I hope that there is some left for me to come collect tomorrow. Theres enougg wood for all of us, and ill never take more than i can store and season safely.
So it looks like the worst of this latest storm is now over, but with winter now in full swing, it definitely wont be the last. Weve been hit by 2 storms in under 2 weeks, storm Arwen and Barra have done their worst, but at least some free wood has come from it.
Not a bad way to spend my lunch time.... A good walk in the fresh cool, crisp wintery air, is ebough to get me through the final afternoon push.
Plus these extra trees will help me cut down on our winter fuel bills and make sure i can supplement the heating costs for years to come.
