The Zero Kilometer Monument was first inaugurated on September 9, 1997 by the vice president, which was then held by Try Sutrisno. About two weeks after being inaugurated, on September 24, B.J. Habibie, who at that time served as Minister of Research and Technology, added a kind of inscription explaining the determination of the geographical position of 0 kilometers of Indonesia, the measurements of which were carried out by the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology using the Global Positioning System.
As a tourist spot, the Zero Kilometer Monument area is also equipped with various adequate facilities. Around the monument, tourists can find parking lots, parks, trash cans, public toilets, and prayer rooms. Right in front of the monument, tourists can also find many traders selling souvenirs, coffee shops, restaurants to women selling Acehnese fried foods and salads. After many renovations, the Zero Kilometer Monument now looks even more magnificent. According to the inscription, the height of the monument is 43.6 meters above sea level. While the design of the monument itself has several philosophies, such as the four pillars that serve as a support symbol of the national boundaries, namely Sabang to Merauke and Miangas to Rote Island. Then the big circle on the monument is an analogy of the number 0.
There is also a rencong weapon on the monument, which is a symbol that Aceh is also fighting for Indonesian independence. In addition, there are also ornaments in the form of an octagon that describe the basic teachings of Islam, Acehnese culture and the archipelago in a wide scope according to the 8 cardinal directions. Because it is very monumental, tourists who come to Sabang City will definitely visit this monument. During the Sail Sabang event, this monumental tour was also visited by tourists.
