🗣North Carolina Legislature Bans Digital Dollar

The North Carolina General Assembly has passed a bill prohibiting the state from adopting a central bank digital currency (CBDC) that could potentially be issued by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The state Senate overrode Governor Roy Cooper’s veto, which he issued in July, arguing that the move was premature and vague, dismissing possible financial innovations at the federal level.

The decision reflects a critical moment in discussions between the Federal Reserve and state legislators on the future of CBDCs in the U.S.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve continues limited testing of digital currency technologies, with Chairman Jerome Powell stating that any move toward a digital dollar requires Congressional approval.
