🗣Laura Andrade: Nearly 90% of Salvadorans Don’t Use Bitcoin
A study by the Institute of Public Opinion at the University of El Salvador (IUDOP) revealed that 88% of Salvadorans do not use cryptocurrency for everyday transactions.
Laura Andrade, Director of IUDOP, noted that President Nayib Bukele’s 2021 push to make Bitcoin legal tender aimed to reach over 70% of the population.
Despite investing hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, Bukele’s crypto ambitions have largely failed, according to Andrade.
Independent economist Cesar Villalona added that Bukele’s decision not to allow wages, pensions, or savings in Bitcoin undermined the cryptocurrency’s potential.
Currently, only 1% of El Salvador’s cash remittances, a major part of its GDP, are made using cryptocurrency. Bukele admitted that Bitcoin adoption has not met expectations.
