In the 20th century, the square changed its name and was rebuilt several times. These are Dumskaya, Sovetskaya, Kalininskaya and October Revolution Square. The modern look was formed mainly in 1950-1970. In the center of the square there was the fountain "Friendship of Peoples", which stood until 2001, but stopped working after Ukraine gained its independence. Since then, in addition to various celebrations, rallies and protests have also been held here. Thus, there have been three revolutions during the existence of Independence Maidan: the Granite Revolution of 1990, the Orange Revolution of 2004, and the Revolution of Dignity of 2013-2014.
