The elements of tradition and cultural diversity in Bali are very diverse. Bali is an island with a myriad of natural panoramas and unique arts that attract tourists. One of them is through dance arts such as the Barong Dance which has meaning and is sacred for the Balinese people.
Barong Dance is a traditional Balinese dance which is still being preserved. The Balinese Barong Dance is an ancestral art heritage originating from pre-Hindu culture. This dance depicts the struggle between dharma or virtue and adharma or evil.
The Balinese Barong Dance is a sacred dance, but in its development it is also used as a public entertainment dance. Generally, Barong Dance is performed in temples and is part of traditional religious ceremonies. In some parts of the dance, there are attractive performances that show the science of immunity.
History of Barong Dance
The Balinese Barong Dance is believed to be a metamorphosis and comes from the Barong Ponorogo or Reog Dance which was brought by King Airlangga when he fled and fled to the island of Bali. In addition to dance, the escape also brought other cultural influences, such as literature, Javanese script, and religion.
In Bali, Barong Ponorogo changes shape and adapts to the stories of Balinese people. Then this dance is used for religious spiritual activities.
Evidence of the influence of the Balinese Barong Dance from Ponorogo can be seen in the form of the barong that appears without a peacock or cat crown. In addition, the Rangda mask also gets the influence of the Bujang Ganong mask.
There is also a group of beings who are steeped in the science of magic. The group is called the young warok and the old warok who are in great pain and are still awake in Ponorogo. There are various forms of barong in Bali, such as the heads of pigs, dogs, elephants and birds which represent their own philosophy.
The name barong is taken from the Sanskrit "bahruang" which means an animal with supernatural powers and is a protector of goodness
Myth & Meaning of Barong Dance
Barong Dance is the most famous performing arts for Balinese people besides the Kecak Dance. This dance is famous among local and foreign tourists.
At first glance, the movement and form of the barong dance is almost similar to the lion dance originating from China. However, the two dances have different storylines, where the barong dance tells the story of the barong and rangda and other characters.
The barong dance tells a story that gives life values, namely the struggle between good and evil. A good figure is depicted through a barong in the form of a four-legged beast whose movements are controlled by two dancers. While the crime is played by Rangda in the form of a scary woman with two sharp and large fangs in her mouth.
