History of Barong Dance

The Balinese Barong Dance is believed to be a metamorphosis and comes from the Barong Ponorogo or Reog Dance which was brought by King Airlangga when he fled and fled to the island of Bali. In addition to dance, the escape also brought other cultural influences, such as literature, Javanese script, and religion.

In Bali, Barong Ponorogo changes shape and adapts to the stories of Balinese people. Then this dance is used for religious spiritual activities.

Evidence of the influence of the Balinese Barong Dance from Ponorogo can be seen in the form of the barong that appears without a peacock or cat crown. In addition, the Rangda mask also gets the influence of the Bujang Ganong mask.

There is also a group of beings who are steeped in the science of magic. The group is called the young warok and the old warok who are in great pain and are still awake in Ponorogo. There are various forms of barong in Bali, such as the heads of pigs, dogs, elephants and birds which represent their own philosophy.

The name barong is taken from the Sanskrit "bahruang" which means an animal with supernatural powers and is a protector of goodness
