Zhang Jufen, born in 1953, was a student at Shanghai Hetian Middle School. In 1969, Zhang Jufang, along with her classmates, responded to the national call for "educated youth go and work in the countryside and mountainous areas" and went to a certain place in Heilongjiang Province to participate in production and construction.
When she went to Heilongjiang, Zhang Jufang was already pregnant. Around the Spring Festival in 1970, Zhang Jufang gave birth to a girl. In that era, getting pregnant before marriage was seen as a taboo, so Zhang Jufen had to give the girl she gave birth to to a family in the production team to raise her, and the child was named Zhang Shufeng.
Zhang Shufeng gradually learned about her background as she grew up. In 2004, she went to Shanghai to look for her mother, but unfortunately couldn't find her.
In 2012, Zhang Shufeng saw a Looking for Relatives program called "You Have a Letter" on Shenzhen TV and used the program team to look for her mother. The program team found a classmate of Zhang Jufen in the middle school and confirmed that she went to Heilongjiang with a big belly and was already pregnant. The program team found Mr. Zhang, the younger brother of Zhang Jufen. At the broadcast, Mr. Zhang took out a photo of Zhang Jufen when she was a child, which looked very similar to the photo of Zhang Shufeng when she was a child. The things Zhang Shufeng said are also very consistent, it should be finding the right person. Mr. Zhang said that his sister passed away due to illness in 2006, and he had never heard her mention that she had a daughter before. Just before she got sick, she said she wanted to go to Heilongjiang to see her friends there, but it never happened. Looking back now, they thought she wanted to see her daughter who was abandoned there.
Having an illegitimate daughter is not a glorious thing. She kept it a secret from her family during her lifetime, which is understandable.
Zhang Shufeng said that looking for her mother was like finding a needle in a haystack. But if her mother wanted to find her, it should be easy. She didn't understand why her mother hadn't been looking for her yet?
Zhang Shufeng finally made a request to visit her mother’s grave. But her uncle refused, he was worried about what his brother-in-law's family would think if they found out?
Zhang Shufeng cried bitterly, having no relatives except for her husband and children in the world. Now, there is no opportunity to even worship her mother.
Zhang Shufeng is unfortunate and the biggest victim in the story, but isn't her mother also a victim? Where is the man who caused this tragedy, Zhang Shufeng's father? From beginning to end, there was no trace of him.
This is a tragedy with the imprint of the times, but more importantly, it is due to personal reasons.
The writer Liu Qing once said that although the road of life is long, there are often only a few crucial steps, especially when one is young.
