A difficulty bomb attack is basically one of the many threats tailored or based on the features of the blockchain technology, it imposes significant risks on blockchain networks that operates or implements the proof of work consensus mechanism, this attack takes advantage of the feature and algorithm in blockchain technology and its network that facilitates the gradual and periodic increase in the difficulty of mining new blocks.
This feature and algorithm is known as "difficulty bomb", and while it might be designed with the aim of ensuring a pre set or predefined difficulty level in the mining process, it can be taken advantage of by attackers to manipulate the difficulty bomb so as to disrupt the network, and as a result leading to delays in block production, reduced transaction processing speed and a temporary or permanent halt of the blockchain network operations.
Therefore, inorder to protect blockchain networks against the difficulty bomb attack, it is crucial for blockchain networks and its developers to implement and adopt some preventive measures and techniques, that is why I am going to be explaining and discussing some of the preventive measures that can be taken to safeguard against difficulty bomb attacks.
- REGULAR UPDATE AND NETWORK MONITORING
In this post of mine the first preventive technique which I will be discussing today is basically carrying out regular updates and network monitoring, this is preventive technique can also be considered to be a basic and fundamental one, and it basically has to do with or involve developers of blockchain networks,
And network participants or users keeping watch and staying vigilant, so as to notice when the blockchain network and its technologies, mechanisms and algorithms is in need or is required to be updated and as a result taking the necessary actions to facilitate or execute the required network update or upgrade.
Additionally, blockchain network users, participants and miners should also keep strict watch and monitoring how difficult it is to mine and create new blocks on the blockchain network so as to be able to notice when there is any malicious or manipulated adjustments or increments in the mining difficulty of blockchain netwotk.
- IMPLEMENT MULTIPLE CONSENSUS MECHANISM
In this post of mine, the second preventive technique which I will be discussing is implementing multiple or diverse consensus mechanisms, therefore, by adopting and implementing diverse consensus mechanisms in blockchain networks helps to significantly reduce the networks vulnerability to difficulty bomb attacks.
Using diversified consensus mechanism can involve or be in the form of using consensus mechanism that is being combined with other algorithms for example a proof of work consensus mechanism that has be combined with other advanced algorithms and mechanisms, the delegated proof of stake consensus mechanism can also be used, they help to prevent difficulty bomb attack.
Additionally, diversified consensus mechanism or hybrid consensus mechanism basically helps to increase the robustness of the security protocols of blockchain networks, which basically makes it more difficult for attackers to find weaknesses in blockchain networks to exploit to execute the difficulty bomb attack.
- CREATING AWARENESS IN MINERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS
In this post of mine, the fourth and the last preventive technique of difficulty bomb attacks which I will be discussing today is educating and creating awareness in miners and other community members because when they are informed they will no longer be ignorant to the threats of the difficulty bomb attacks.
They will also be involved in looking for solutions to mitigate and address the issue and risk of difficulty bomb attack, they will also know the roles they have to play in ensuring the security of the blockchain networks against difficulty bomb attacks and every other kind of digital or cryptographic attack which threatens the effective and efficient functioning of the blockchain network.
Therefore, it is important for blockchain network project developers to invest in creating awareness and educating their community members and miners about the significant threat which the difficulty bomb attack poses to blockchain networks and their proper and effective functioning.
