If only I for run am like this ba, in for no turn out this way. - Peter
I'm almost certain that just like my generic friend Peter, most of us have uttered some variation of this quote at least once in our life time either loudly or in the quiet of our minds when reviewing our past decisions, actions or inactions. This simple review of the past through the lens of "If only" as deceptively harmless as it seems is actually quite harmful and today we're going to learn why and how we can move from "If only" to "Next time"
The past viewed through the lens of "if only" is one of the greatest mental roadblock we place upon ourselves. If only we knew, if only we did it this way instead of that way, if only we never took that decision, if only we read, if only we answered that question, if only we made that plan or never made that plan, if only.
According to psychologies, reminiscing on "if only" as we view the past in more ways than one prevents us from learning from our mistakes and moving forward. The past is lost forever, mistakes were made, "if only" isn't going to change anything so why don't we replace "if only" with "next time".
Why don't we when viewing our lost past instead of reminiscing on "if only", why don't we look to the future and say Next time I would do it better, Next time I would take this decision instead of that, next time I would read, next time I won't make that plan or I would make that plan and so forth.
As easy as it sounds, we do ourselves a lot of good by replacing "if only" with "next time", we free ourselves of our self imposed mental roadblock which frees us from dwelling on past mistakes and arms us with the knowledge and optimism needed to do better "Next time"
