When winter comes and lots of snow, it's time to go outside and build a snowman! It is easy to roll three snowballs: large, medium and small. Replace them with the largest one at the bottom and the smallest one at the top for the base.Check for wet and compacted snow. If your snow is too crumbly or powdery, you won't be able to make a snowman. Go to the snow and hold some between your hands. Mix it together and if it forms a ball, you can make a snowman.[
If it snows, it's not good to make a snowman. If you make a snowman near the house, it also provides shade for part of the day.

This is only to help the snowboarder in the long run. If you don't have a lot of shade, it doesn't matter.
Use your hands to wrap a snowball for the bottom part. Use both hands to take a small piece of snow and a large one. Mix it together in a round shape. Roll the snow into a ball in your hands until it is about 30 cm wide or until it feels heavy.

Make sure you wear warm, waterproof clothing, otherwise your hands will start to hurt from handling the snow. Move the ball across the floor to create a floor area. Place the snowball on the floor and start rolling it forward. As you roll, avoid creating a roll by changing the direction you roll the ball. Continue rolling until the ball is about 90 cm in diameter.[2]
Stop throwing snowballs to where you want the snowman to be. Make sure to start somewhere near here and roll the ball to get there.
It usually works best to push the ball in a large circle, but be aware that this will leave clear patterns in the snow. Tap your snowballs together occasionally to prevent too much snow from falling.

Create a middle section. Take some snow with both hands and make it into a hard ball. Add more snow until the bale is too heavy. Place it on the floor and turn it like you did the bottom part. This time, stop when the ball is about 24 inches in diameter
Roll the snowball in a circle around the ground, or in a straight line out and back to where it was. This way, when you hit the ball, you won't have to carry it too far down the field.
Lift the middle section over the bottom section. Depending on your height, have someone help you lift the big ball. Bend your knees and make sure to keep your legs straight rather than your back. Pick it up and gently place it on the lower part.

Make sure it's in the middle of the bottom ball. It helps if you hit the upper part of the bottom ball and damage the lower part of the middle ball. This helps the central region to sit in the lower region. Make a snowball for the head. Take the last snowball for the head. Use your hands to pick it up until it is about 30 cm wide. You should be able to do the head without it, and you can turn it if you want. Pack the snow between sections. Once the three sections are in place, collect more snow and push it between each section. This will make the snowman look even from top to bottom, instead of looking like three snowballs placed in each one.
Place the carrot in the center of the head to make the nose. Take a length of raw carrot and place it in the middle of the top snowball. Be sure to place it so there is room above for the eyes and below for the mouth.
Making your own snowman is creative. If you have something else that you think would look good as a nose, use that.

Use buttons, stones or dirt for eyes. Place them on top of the carrots and place them one by one on the right and left. Put them on the head and turn them around so that they stick to the snow. Anything around will do for the eyes.
Other options to use for eyes are a yellow ping pong ball, a blue rubber bouncy ball, or a large green plastic jewel. Make a border with a row of stones or dirt. Use the same material that you use for the eyes, or mix it with other things around. Place the tip under the nose, but not too close to the middle part.

Cut off the edge of the impression, glue fake plastic teeth on the face, or bend down a piece of plastic tubing to make a smile. Add two sticks for the snowman's arms. Find a few plants that are about 2.5 inches wide or less and about 3 feet (90 cm) tall. Place the sticks into the middle part of the snowman. Place the trees to slope up or down, giving the snowman a comfortable ride.
Before the arms, if desired, put a shirt or dress on the snowman's body. I truly believe that there are certain things that you should not pass up, and building a snowman is one of them. My teenagers and I still do at least one each year (we can't resist a good snow day!). Paving the way will probably lead to a snowstorm and, in perfect conditions, lead us to the big hill above the next town for an afternoon of sledding.
