South Africa's crypto industry is poised for a major regulatory shift as the country's Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) gears up to potentially license 36 cryptocurrency companies by the end of December. The FSCA has laid out stringent licensing requirements for crypto companies over the past year. Firms must meet standards related to conduct, governance, risk management, and adequate financial resources. Industry leaders welcome the regulatory clarity. A handful of South African crypto exchanges like Valr and Ovex already obtained temporary licenses in recent months.

This regulatory shift aligns with global trends. Countries like Germany, France, and Malaysia moved to license crypto providers in 2022. South Africa's northern neighbor, Zimbabwe, opened licensing for digital currency exchanges last month. Tighter oversight aims to foster investor protection and mitigate illicit activities like fraud or money laundering.

If licensed, these 36 crypto companies could soon offer digital asset services to South African institutions and retail investors.
