What is the Fractal Walrus?

in blog •  last month  (edited)

This question has been posed to me by people who have wondered if I randomly threw two seemingly unrelated concepts together. Well, while many things seem to be more pleasurable when meaning is not explained, and instead left to be subjective, I would much rather explain the origins of my name here. Interpret it the way you will, it is not necessarily incorrect. For those who wish to know what I intended, here it is:

Fractals are self-similar patterns that repeat when you zoom in. There are many other patterns that one can become fixated on as aides to describing our reality. Oh, I see a pattern here, a pattern there! The work for describing reality is then done. No need to keep "poking around" when one has patterns with which to describe reality. No need to probe further. This person did X thing because of Y factor. It is a tempting fruit to partake of. An easy trap. What does the Walrus do when it knows of the trappings of pattern? Well, like everyone else who would like to believe everything can be quantified and "patternized," it wants to latch on. It wants the shortcut, but then it learns. It learns about the problems of predictability, which is built on the assumption that we can know all of the variables. The Walrus, stands, albeit daunted, against the forces that prevent it from learning. The belief that one knows something often prevents one from knowing something. Why dig further when one thinks the treasure has been attained?

The Walrus knows that it must accept its inability to know everything, and yet still live in the face of this reality. The Walrus, undaunted, must persist in the chilling arctic winds of uncertainty among peers that see it as incompetent. The Walrus, undaunted, must persist, tusks ready, to plow through the explanations that are so readily available. Some explanations for truth are impervious to the tusk, but others give way. The Walrus, persists in spite of the fear that is derived from uncertainty. The Walrus has few other options.
