Antarctica is often considered the coldest, driest and coldest place on Earth. But somehow, a life will continue to find a way.
While changes in global temperatures might trigger the melting of polar ice caps, there is something to celebrate in the Arctic. The reason, scientists recently discovered a hidden world beneath Antarctica. This world is full of life.
Quoted from BGR, this world was discovered at a depth of more than 1,640 feet beneath the ice surface in Antarctica after drilling a hole through the ice. The team of scientists then dropped the camera into the hole. At the bottom, they see some blurry and small specks flashing in front of the camera.
But the spots were not due to faulty equipment. Instead, it turned out to be a herd of tiny amphipods moving in front of the camera lens.
The scientists said the findings made them aware that they were caught off guard, as they did not expect to find any kind of life deep beneath the icy surface.
Researchers say that having the world hidden beneath the Arctic ice is clear evidence of ecosystems at play. Overall, they said the discovery of a hidden world beneath the Antarctic ice made them rejoice.
This discovery is extraordinary, that's for sure. Apart from providing evidence of a vast ecosystem beneath the ice, previously no one expected to find any life there, let alone a hidden world beneath Antarctica. Therefore, it makes sense that the discovery was very surprising.
As mentioned earlier, Antarctica is often considered one of, if not the coldest, driest and coldest place on Earth. As one of the polar "caps", it is responsible for 90% of the world's ice and 80% of its fresh water.
So, this continent has a huge influence on our planet. That is why scientists are trying to study it further. The discovery of the hidden world beneath Antarctica is made at The Ross Ice Shelf.
It is the largest ice sheet in the world and has been the focus of several research projects over the years. Scientists say they happened to come across a structure that houses the entire amphipod ecosystem.
Scientists hope to better understand the different climate scenarios that could change the Ross Sea. Instead, they left after discovering a completely unknown world and ecosystem. This is a remarkable achievement and it is hoped that it will continue to shed light on this cold and mysterious part of the world.
