I closed the week with a hot and very tough hike up and down the rocky Granite Mountain trail for an exhausting 8 miles.
Lulu had an upset stomach last night but was fine this morning for our customary two miles and she was fine for the rest of the day.
The Granite Mountain trail definitely wasn't for Lulu so she spent quiet time with momma.
The first mile and a half of my hike was somewhat familiar as we had hiked out to this point a couple of times before.
From here the trail began steady climb up along a narrow and rocky track as it climbed up and around the rugged mountain. My quads really got a hard workout as the trail gained about 1300 feet in elevation over the next couple of miles and I was baked under the bright sun with fluffy clouds far in the distance.
I was lucky enough to have some frequent breezes that rose up and over the boulder strewn mountainside that kept the temperature more manageable. The scenery was great, but the hazy conditions took away from the expansive vista..
The trail topped out at just a bit over 7000 feet as I made my way through a peaceful bowl in the granite that was surprisingly green with grass and fire-scarred pines before finishing a few hundred yards later high above the basin below.
The return trip wasn't much easier as the strep descent coupled with the rocky trail made for slow and hard trekking. My quads were again beat up with the downhills and I had to stay alert in order not to trip.
It felt great once I rejoined the more mellow trail back to the trailhead and my waiting car.
