Reality Check

Hold yourself! Or should I say take a chill pill....you really should calm down. Okay, this is actually weird and funny but at the same time I find it disturbing.

I use to have a friend who I went to the same high school with. We remained friends for a while after high school but seeing the person she was growing to be I just moved away from her after much advice which she never took. Years later, we met at the school reunion where we exchanged numbers and decided to catch up on things. I knew I didn't want the friendship but I still went along with it. She asked for my Instagram handle, so she followed me....naturally I had to follow her back. I went through her page and I saw she was "living" well, nice dresses, bubbly friends, you know she had it all together...plus I saw she works with an event company. I was so happy for her and jealous to be honest because I have always wanted to work in an event company or any event related matters but wasn't opportune to. But there she was living her best life.

Then it started, each time she makes a post of whatever it may be she made sure she tagged me to every one of them. I mean why did she have to tag me to see her pretty cool photos, she having fun and all that. At first, I got jealous...started comparing and feeling less of myself. I was living okay but not as much as this but my mind just always finds a way to wander off to how nice the bag was but I can't afford that or the dress she was putting on and so many others. If it was someone else that I never knew it wouldn't have mattered but this was someone I went to school with and trust me the feeling is different.

It went on and on for a while till I had enough, I unfollowed her and blocked her. It was obvious she was doing it intentionally, so I just needed to jump off from that mental stress. I talked to myself and picked up from there and freed my mind from negative thoughts that was beginning to get me worked up.

Weeks later, I got to know from another friend of ours that she was actually squatting with a friend and all those things I see her posing with are for the person she stays with....then came all the secrets. I was shocked but at the same time relieved that I snapped out of those feelings fast.

Sadly, that is our reality right now. Some people actually get depressed because they encourage and accommodate those thoughts like I did. Not knowing that they are even better than what they see on different platforms. Do I blame that friend of mine? No, I blame myself, for allowing those thoughts eat into mind without realizing how they were affecting me little by little. I could blame her for tagging me though.

What about you who do not even get tagged but make yourself feel inferior because of things you see that most possibly is fake, and if it is real, so what?. Why should you drag yourself doing things you aren't suppose to. As much as it isn't suppose to be in the normal sense....it actually is, because we made it so.

Now listen, you alone can call back your thoughts from slipping to the unknown. You are the only one to encourage or permits what happens in your head because at the end of the day....you are taking responsibility for your choices and actions. One beautiful thing about life is, if you see something you like....you can get it. Obviously, if you aim higher....you have to work harder, not just admiring and wishing all day!
