World Racing

Mercedes-Benz World Racing was released in 2003, initially for the Xbox and later for Windows, PlayStation 2 & Nintendo GameCube, and built heavily on the experience gained from the manufacturer's previous games (N.I.C.E. 2, Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing). In keeping with the title, it featured only Mercedes-Benz vehicles, with some racing cars (e.g. W 125) and historic cars (e.g. 280 SL) in addition to the then-current range of production vehicles.

Characteristic for the game is the design of the racing tracks. Whereas in previous racing games the tracks were laid out in a hose or tube shape through a space not used in the game, World Racing used a completely calculated map on which there was a predetermined network of drivable routes. These predetermined paths were closed off in different ways for different courses. Overall, this technique, which was already used in games like Carmageddon, made it possible to let the player drive in a large area with high visibility and a lot of detail off the edges of the tracks.

In terms of gameplay, the career mode is in the foreground. Here, races take place in constantly changing sceneries and with other vehicles. In addition, the player must also complete special tasks (so-called missions) in the career mode, such as driving through checkpoints scattered around the terrain or setting a new lap record on a test track. The player is rewarded by unlocking new vehicles, engine options and tracks. In addition, the player receives partial scores for points other than the pure race result as part of a performance evaluation; thus, his driving style, fairness and other things are also evaluated. In addition, the player can start a single race or repeat missions of the career at any time.

A multiplayer mode was originally only available in MBWR in the form of a split screen; only with a patch were races over local networks or the Internet possible.
