Ideally the Women's day is celebrated on 08th March but in Oman there are 2 days on which the Women's day is celebrated. One is the general one 08th March and the other one is special for Oman which is 17th Oct when Omani Women's day is celebrated. This day was introduced in 2009 under the leadership of then Late Sultan His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and still continues being that way. The day was introduced with an intention to celebrate the Women's position in all aspects of the Omani society. On this day there are Awards that are given to Women in various fields and their achievements are recognized.
The Late Sultan King) of Oman His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said was very progressive and always encouraged Women to make an impact in the society. In the year 2005 Oman joined a convention to eliminate all forms of discrimination against Women and to give Women the social status and all the rights to shoulder their responsibility equally in the society. This is true that in Oman I see the Women are very aspiring and they hold good positions in every field. They show lot of power and dominance in their society.
I am not sure if this system exist in other GCC countries, but in Oman when a girl gets married the boy has to give dowry to the girl's family. In India and many other cultures that I know it is the opposite, that the girl's family has to give dowry to the boy during marriage and that is the reason why parents do not want a girl child, because they feel she is a burden and with that they sometimes go in for an abortion if they come to know that they are going to have a girl child. In India the gender revelation has been banned for the very same reason. In Oman it is the opposite, parents want a girl child because they think she is an asset and not a liability for them. Personally I would not want to encourage any such systems in any society however if the power of women has to change in the society then this is a good practice of reversing every role in the society, where the man has to do exactly the same things what a woman has to just like the dowry system. The rape statistics are the lowest in Oman, because there is 0 tolerance to such crimes against women in this Country.
Every year there are celebrations with a theme and this year the theme of the celebrations is ‘Women are partners in development’ where a recognition is given to them in their increasing role in the growth of the Sultanate in all spheres. That's very encouraging and motivating. I wish loads of power to all the Women of the world on this day and forever and that we Women can always stand in our power and show the world that we can do anything and everything where the male dominant society has underestimated us.
Today's newspaper carries out some notable achievements of Women in all fields, which I have shared the pictures. These type of publishing are also motivating and encouraging for other women in the society. It makes them believe in themselves and understand that they have a prominent role to play in the development of the nation. They are equally important and without them this society cannot progress.
It is for sure that the Women of this Country do not have to struggle and fight for their rights. They are treated with respect
