I took advantage of the weekend that has just ended to fulfil one of my dreams: a long walk in the middle of the Patagonian Andean forest among pines, larches, myrtles and other species native to the Andean region.
Normally I have done this hike several times, but usually in a quick way, while taking my faithful friend and companion Tomy for a walk, about an hour long.
This time, however, I wanted to spend the whole weekend walking through the forest, getting to know its forests, observing new species of trees that I had never noticed before.
A different kind of walk, unhurried and without pauses. Constantly looking around me at the changing and contrasting effect that the forest offers at every step.
El fin de semana que acaba de terminar lo aproveché para cumplir uno de mi sueños: hacer una larga caminata en medio del bosque andino patagónico entre pinos, alerces, arrayanes y otras especies nativas de la comarca andina.
Normalmente he hecho esta caminata varias veces, pero generalmente en forma rápida, mientras sacaba a pasear mi fiel amigo y compañero Tomy, tipo una hora de duración.
Esta vez en cambio quiere transcurrir todo el fin de semana recorriendo el bosque, conociendo sus senteros, observando nuevas especies de árboles de cuya existencia nunca me había percatado.
Un paseo distinto, sin prisas y sin pausas. Mirando constatnemente a mi alrededor el efecto cambiando y contrastante que, a cada paso, ofrece el bosque.
The most emblematic aspect when entering the forest is fear. A fear of the unknown, of getting lost and not finding the way out.
A fear of where the paths that I can see for a few metres before disappearing in the intricate tangle of trees and bushes that populate this marvellous plant universe will lead me.
I am afraid to look back and not recognise the parts I have passed through.
It is always advisable to take a reference point, especially when there are forks in the path. If I first took the fork to the right, when I return I should take it to the left.
These are elementary rules to which we do not give importance when we live and walk in an open space, but in the forest it is different. Because the landmarks disappear and everything is a huge, uniform mass of vegetation.
El aspecto más emblemático cuando se entra en el bosque es el miedo. Un miedo a lo desconocido, a perderse y no encontrar la salida.
Un miedo a donde me conducirán los senderos que alcanzo a ver por pocos metros antes de desaparecer en la maraña intrincada de árboles y arbustos que pueblan este universo vegetal maravilloso.
Miedo al mirar hacia atrás y no reconocer las partes por donde he pasado.
Siempre es aconsejable tomar un punto de referencia sobre todo cuando hay bifurcaciones del sendero. Si primero tomé la bifurcación a derecha, cuando regrese debo hacerlo a la izquierda.
Son reglas elementales a las cuáles cuando vivimos y circulamos en un espacio abierto no le damos importancia. pero dentro del bosque es distinto. Porque los puntos de referencia desaparecen. y todo es una inmensa masa vegetal, uniforme.
It has been a long time since I have seen small pine trees growing at ground level. This year has been very generous in terms of rainfall and this has created a blanket of vegetation that allows the pine cones to reproduce when they fall to the ground.
The new species introduced to repopulate deforested areas, called oregon pine, has contributed a lot to the development of the forest, allowing a rapid repopulation of the felled areas.
Occasionally a clearing opens up where trees have been cut down and where others are marked for the next felling.
It is not nice to see a large pine tree marked for felling, but it is necessary so that the trees do not choke each other and can grow and develop more freely and to their full potential.
Hacía mucho tiempo que no veía los pequeños pinos crecer a ras del suelo. Este año ha sido muy generoso en lluvias y eso ha permitido crear un manto vegetal que permiten a las piñas de reproducirse cuando caen al suelo.
La nueva especie introducida para repoblar áreas desforestadas, llamada pino oregón, ha contribuído mucho al desarrollo del bosque permitiendo un rápido repoblamente en las zonas taladas.
De vez en cuando se abre un claro donde han sido cortados los árboles y donde hay otros marcados para su próxima tala.
No es lindo ver un gran pino señalado para cortar, pero es necesario para que los árboles no se ahoguen entre si y puedan crecer y desarrollarse más libremente y en su plenitud.
The new plants are replacing the older ones, the wood of which is beginning to be highly valued.
There is another detail that people who are not from these places are usually unaware of. Conifers, in spite of their height, have a very shallow root, which causes them to collapse as a consequence of strong winds, especially when it rains a lot and there are hurricane winds.
For this reason, the natural wonder that is reforestation by the magic of nature itself has a practical and sobering effect.
No two parts of the forest are the same. The colours change. The appearance changes.
We close our eyes, we open them again, and the journey seems to have changed. The polychromatic panorama around us is beyond human comprehension.
Las plantas nuevas van substituyendo a aquellas más ancianas cuya madera comienza, por otra parte, a ser muy apreciada.
Hay otro detalle que normalmente la gente que no es de estos lugares desconoce. Las coníferas, a pesar de su altura, tienen una raíz muy poco profunda, lo que causa su derrumbe como consecuencia de los fuertes vientos especialmente cuando llueve mucho y hay vientos huracanados.
Por este motivo esa maravilla natural que es la reforestación por obra y magia de la naturaleza misma tiene un efecto práctico y aleccionador.
Ninguna parte del bosque es igual a otra. Los colores cambian. El aspecto cambia.
Cerramos los ojos, los volvemos a abrir y el pasiaje parece que hubiera cambiado. El panorama policromático que se ofrece a nuestro alrededor va más allá de la comprensión humana.
The flowers give it that touch of distinction and delicacy that makes it impossible not to stop and look at them.
They appear in every clearing in the forest, those that allow the sun's rays to filter through and create a new and magical plant world for the visitor's eyes.
Light colours predominate (from white to yellow) because sometimes the sun's rays are not strong enough to penetrate. But they are equally beautiful and delicate.
They are different from the alpine flowers that grow on the slopes of the mountains with a more direct and prolonged exposure to the sun.
Forest flowers grow in the form of bushes and develop at the foot of large pine trees.
Las flores le dan ese toque de distinción y delicadeza que hacen imposible no pararse a observarlas.
Aparecen en cada claro del bosque, aquellos que permiten a los rayos del sol de filtrarse y crear un mundo vegetal nuevo y mágico a los ojos del visitante.
Predominan los colores claros, del blanco al amarillo) porque a veces los rayos solares no tienen la suficiente fuerza para penetrar. Pero son igualmente hermosas y delicadas.
Son distintas de las flores alpinas que crecen en las faldas de las montañas con una exposición solar más directa y prolongada.
Las flores del bosque crecen bajo la forma de matorrales y se desarrollan al pie de los grandes pinos.
It is impossible to describe the sensation of walking through the forest. Each path, each unmarked itinerary, leads us to an unknown and mysterious world, where the main protagonist is nature in all its splendour.
And we, human beings, simple spectators of a natural wonder that never ceases to dazzle us.
Es imposible describir la sensación de transitar el bosque. Cada sendero, cada itinerario no marcado, nos conduce a un mundo desconocido y misterioso, donde la principal protagonista es la naturaleza en todo su esplendor.
Y nosotros, los seres humanos, simples espectadores de una maravilla natural que nunca deja de deslumbrarnos.
