Life in Extreme Weather Conditions

So many of us have everything in life and yet we complain about the little things that we do not have in life. I was watching a documentary about people living in the most remote areas of the world under extreme weather conditions and how they survive in it. These types of documentaries help us to reflect so much on life. These people living in such extreme conditions need some very basic things to survive. Like people living in regions with temperature going upto -60 and -70 degrees. I wonder how they would be surviving in those parts of the world.

This documentary was on people living in the Antarctica region. Imagine 6 months of no sunlight, how those people would be surviving. If I do not get Sunlight for 2 days, I feel restless and low. Their homes have some very basic things. Their mobility is limited. Their definition of social is completely different unlike us people living in cities where over the weekend we get out go to restaurants, pubs and spend time. There are no shopping malls to take a stroll. I cannot even think what living in those places would be like. If there are emergencies, then it would take them hours to get the first help.

I am sure no one would want to live there permanently and most of the people settled in these extreme regions must be there for work as there are many scientific stations in such places for research purpose. Life in these regions makes us understand what the lives of our ancestors must have been. It will take us back to the stone age times where there was no technology and very limited mobility. Now we have at least technology to stay connected and helicopters flying in those regions for mobility. But still life is not at all simple, living in these parts of the world. One has to think of stocking up food for months. There is no immediate shopping if you forget something. Because the nearest store may be some 5 to 6 hours away.

Today living without a mobile phone access also is difficult for many people. Imagine what it would be here. Surely there would be very limited mobile access in these types of regions or probably no access at all in some parts. My friend works on a Cruise Liner and he tells me that the Internet connection is very expensive on a cruise so if you take it you need to use it very sparingly. We are so used to mindless browsing and using the data and so addicted to it that when it's not available to us we feel like something big is missing from our life.

But I guess people living here in these regions must be living more harmoniously and will be closely bonded with each other. Living in these regions is like a self-test of perseverance and endurance. I would not even dare to dream going and living in such places even if it is for any amount of money offered to me.
