Why would I want to use oatmilk instead of «normal» cow's milk?

I guess most of my readers would already know, but for those who don't… You can watch this video (short&clear) -

First thing I want to say is: if you have some vegan milk available near where you live – it’s better to buy it and live happily :) Because it’s very important to support vegan producers! And supermarkets must see the demand for vegan foods and thus be motivated to supply more!

But if you live in circumstances like mine: some vegan milks are available only in the center, and the price is 5 times higher than for cow’s milk – than you can use my recipe as the cheapest plant-based milk ever!

I looove nuts and nutmilks… But if I am to use nuts for milk everyday (like I do now with oats) – I’ll go broke very soon! Nuts are expensive L But oats are cheap like anything!

Cheapness is very important to me, because my husband drinks 1 liter a day! He used to be a crazy milk lover, binging on milk like some people do with beer :D And I managed to take him off the cow’s milk hook with this homemade goodness! He says: “if you always make this milk when it’s over, I won’t even think of cow’s milk”. And that’s what I do! And feel good :)

The whole process of making this milk, including soaking, making itself and washing everything after – takes no more than 10 minutes altogether!

So here we go.

Ingredients:

rolled oats – 1 cup

flaxseeds – 2 tbs (ground in coffee grinder, or maybe flax flour will work)

sugar 1 tbs (or any time of sweetener you want. Sugar is the cheapest for me)

pinch of salt (I don’t know why, it makes the milk tastier!)

pinch of cinnamon powder

vanilla flavour (this one is very important as it reduces the “grain” taste)

Soak oats and flaxes for at least one hour, or more (if it’s hot, store in the fridge until you make it).

A little hack – in order to avoid measuring 1 cup every time, I drew a line on the jar with a marker – so I know till where to pour oats J

Here’s how my workplace for this process looks

Blend all the things together with approximately 700ml liter of water (I just fill up my blender without measuring).

Strain. For comfort I first use a big sieve, then pour it in the bottle with a small sieve into the funnel.

In the small sieve it’s good to stir with spoon – it will be faster.

Done!

If you want to fill in a whole 1 liter bottle, increase all the ingredients by 1.5x. Actually what I do: because the whole liter of milk will not fit into my blender, I add extra cup of water into the big sieve (of course having increased the ingredients by 1.5x).

You can store it in fridge for about 5 days. You can use it everywhere, in coffee, cocktails, in most recipes. For mashed potatoes I also make oat milk, but without sugar or other additives.

Flaxseeds in this recipe create a pleasant “thickness” and also, you know they’re good for you J Extra Omega 3 is never bad!

I also mix in this milk some liquid Vitamin D in winter and algae-derived vegan EPA+DHA (good thing).

Tell me if you try this recipe !

Enjoy and have fun !

Your recipe appears to be simple. All it takes is the right ingredients and proper measurement to get the best of this. Well Done
