Statistics show that 50 to 60 million Americans suffer from sleep disorder, and about 35 percent of American adults get less than seven hours of sleep per night. Inadequate sleep also carries the risks of road accidents, workplace accidents and complex diseases. The effects of insufficient sleep fall directly on our brain. A study by Harvard Medical found that those who slept five hours a night had a 15 percent increased risk of death. Inadequate sleep increases the amount of a hormone called cortisol in our body. Which affects our high blood pressure and high blood glucose levels. Insufficient sleep can lead to mood swings.

The steps you can take to get a good and healthy sleep are-

  • Diagnosing Sleep Problems: If you think you have a sleep problem that is affecting your sleep, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible.

  • Change in lifestyle: Although some parts of your life may be more difficult to change than others, you can take some steps that are probably within your power and can greatly improve your sleep. Exercise regularly, avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeine.

  • Ensure sleep environment: Most people underestimate the importance of their sleep environment. Although everyone has their own preferences, people generally prefer to sleep in a dark, quiet, comfortable environment.

  • Phone and tab off: Studies have shown that using the phone while sleeping disturbs sleep. Using the phone and other devices in bed can cause you to lose sleep speed and significantly delay your actual bedtime.

If you are not sure how to apply healthy sleeping habits, consult your doctor.
