Let's gain some knowledge about Surah Al-Baqarah verse 83.

Surah Al-Baqarah is the second chapter of the Quran, and it consists of 286 verses.

Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 83 is as follows:

"And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah, and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing."

Verse 83 is a larger passage in Surah Al-Baqarah that addresses the Children of Israel, specifically their history, previous covenants with Allah, and their subsequent deviations from those covenants.
In this particular verse, Allah reminds the Children of Israel of the covenant He took from them and their subsequent failure to uphold it.

This verse refers to a covenant or agreement that Allah took from the Children of Israel, which included several commandments and obligations. The covenant highlighted the following points:

1. Worshiping Allah alone: The verse emphasizes that the Children of Israel were commanded to worship none but Allah. Monotheism is a fundamental principle of Islam and was also an essential teaching in previous religious traditions.

2. Kindness towards parents: The verse emphasizes the importance of treating parents with kindness, and respect, and fulfilling their rights. It is considered a significant duty in Islam to honor and care for one's parents.

3. Good treatment of relatives: The verse encourages the Children of Israel to maintain good relationships with their relatives, recognizing the importance of family ties and the obligation to treat them with kindness and care.

4. Assistance to orphans and the needy: The verse emphasizes the importance of supporting those who are less fortunate, including orphans and those in need.
   This highlights the importance of charity and social responsibility in Islam.

5. Speaking kindly to people: The verse advises the Children of Israel to speak to others in a good and respectful manner.
   It promotes positive communication and discourages offensive or harmful speech.

6. Establishment of prayer: The verse stresses the obligation of establishing the ritual prayer (salah) as an integral part of the religious obligations.
   Prayer holds a central place in Islam and serves as a means of connecting with Allah.

7. Giving zakah: The verse mentions the obligation of giving zakah, which is a form of obligatory charity in Islam.
   Zakah is a means of purifying wealth and assisting those in need.

Throughout the Quran, the Children of Israel are often mentioned as an example for the believers, highlighting both their righteous actions and their transgressions.
In this verse, the focus is on their disobedience and turning away from their obligations.

The covenant mentioned in the verse refers to the covenant that Allah took from the Children of Israel at various times, including the time of Prophet Moses (Musa, peace be upon him).
This covenant was a solemn agreement between Allah and the Children of Israel, outlining their duties and obligations as a chosen community.

The verse mentions specific obligations that were part of the covenant, including the command to worship Allah alone, without associating any partners with Him.
Monotheism was a central message in the teachings of Prophet Moses and other prophets sent to the Children of Israel.

In addition to the obligation of monotheism, the verse highlights various social and ethical responsibilities.
These include treating parents with kindness and respect, maintaining good relationships with relatives, showing compassion to orphans and the needy, speaking in a manner that is respectful and beneficial, establishing the ritual prayer (salah), and giving zakah (obligatory charity).

The verse also acknowledges that while many of the Children of Israel turned away from their obligations, there were still a few among them who remained faithful and obedient.

This verse serves as a reminder not only to the Children of Israel but also to all believers, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling our obligations to Allah, maintaining good character, and taking care of our relationships with others. It reminds us that neglecting these responsibilities can lead to deviation and turning away from the path of righteousness.

Overall, this verse carries a message of accountability, highlighting the importance of upholding our commitments and obligations to Allah and to our fellow human beings.
