정물화란 움직이지 않고 정지해 있는 대상을 그림으로 옮기는 것을 말해요. 우리의 생활주변에서 흔히 접하는 과일, 화초, 식품, 물건 등을 보기 좋게 배치해 놓은 상태에서 창의성을 발휘하여 채색을 하는 것입니다. 위의 사진은 실제 정물을 배열한 것이에요.

첫 번째 사진을 그린 실제 그림을 사진으로 촬영했습니다. 원래 동양에서는 꽃, 나뭇가지, 과일, 그릇 등을 조화시킨 정물화를 그려 왔었어요.
반면 서양에서는 종교적 목적 등에 의해 벽화로 그려져 오던 중 17세기에 들어서면서 실내를 장식할 조그마한 정물화의 필요성을 느낀거죠. 그때부터 발전해 왔답니다. 정지된 무한함을 표현하는 정물화를 그림으로써 살아움직이는 인간의 유한함을 은연중 드러내기도 한거죠.
